Let’s face it, friends. Summer date nights bring a world of hurdles with them. How is it possible to look hot when your makeup is melting off your face like an ice cream treat in a sauna? I live in Texas, and in Texas, we have frizzy hair (due to the humidity), chafing thighs (due to sweat), and high blood pressure (that might be due to my in-laws). *Realtime proof: I just slid off of a barstool at a wine bar and there’s an embarrassing puddle of sweat to show for it. We are not hankering—to use some southern slang—for a “hot” date with our partners.

We want something cool. Cold. Frigid.

But I’m not naïve to the types of summers several of you enjoy further north.

Your summers are patio lunches and mountain picnics. Edison bulbs strung across outdoor spaces and board games. Beer gardens and corn hole.

And then there’s the beach bunch. With your boardwalks and your kayaks and your sunsets that even Pantone can’t compete with. You are the blondes of climate zones.

There is one things that brings all of us together, though: the quest for the perfect summer date night.

And that’s where we come in.

Below you’ll find summer date night ideas and summer date night outfits. These have been vetted by our very best to make sure you’re wearing the cutest summer outfits for your fun nights out. Consider our suggestions a BINGO card to mark through, or pick one, book the sitter, and get out of the house with your partner for a fun-filled summer night.

Summer Date Ideas: Barbie Movie Date Night

It was my husband’s idea for us to schedule a night to the new Barbie movie. We both love Ryan Gosling, and the trailer looks incredible. Honestly, I would have gone for the fashion, alone, but I think we’re in for a thrilling ride through Malibu with Barbie and Barbie and Barbie and Barbie and Ken and Ken and Ken, etc. I may not have a dream closet of my own, but if I did, these summer date night outfits would absolutely be in it. Which one will you wear to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film?

Duncan Halter Dress // Elle Tank & Skirt // Easy Street Crop Pullover // Penelope Mini Dress  // Monet Top & Delilah Pants // Juno Heeled Sandal

Summer Date Ideas: Patio Picnic

No patio is off-limits here. Drop in on a restaurant you’ve been eyeing, pop into a new wine bar, or borrow your neighbor’s covetable back porch. This is the date that takes you out of routine and into the throes of Paris. Make sure to pack a charcuterie spread and bubbles. This summer date idea is trés magnifique—and so are these summer date outfits.

Patio Picnic

Cece Black Sunglasses // Flora Shirt & Flora Short // Mika Asymmetrical Dress // Porta Denim Mini // Crinkle Strappy Dress // Stand Out Printed 1 Piece

Summer Date Ideas: Top Golf or Putt Putt

Who’s up for a round of golf? Now, if you’re as competitive as me, it can be advantageous to enter into this perfectionistic game with a drink in your hand. My partner and I are huge fans of Top Golf, where we usually indulge in burgers and beers—it’s the diet of our ancestors—and have a fun summer date night. I’m confined to the belief that mini golf requires a mini dress, so please peruse the following picks for cute summer date outfits that are up to par (Don’t forget the bike shorts).

Top Golf

Libby Mini Dress // Topanga Cuff Shorts // Danielle Set // Checker Knit Top // Beginner's Luck Slouch Shorts // Jo Double Band Pants

Summer Date Ideas: Skittle-Themed Night In

Homebodies of the night, you are seen. There’s nothing wrong with preferring a date night at home. The only danger is your *special night in turning into a *regular night. If you’re in your normal space, It can be tempting to creak your laptop open to check a work email or fold the laundry that’s covering the best seat in the house. My advice is to draw the boundaries early, get on the same page, and add a little magic. For this staying-in summer date idea, you’ll need at least one bag of Skittles. Original, Wild Berry, and Tropical are all welcome here. The concept is simple: Take turns guessing the flavor. For a sexy twist, assign a penalty for guessing wrong. Think Friends: The One at the Beach for inspiration.

Summer Date Ideas: Caffeine & Ice Cream

It’s a widely accepted fact that parents cannot stay up past 10:30pm. Honestly, the closest we’re getting to midnight is Taylor Swift’s album, and most of us are a-okay with that—except when it comes to summer date nights. Our parental mantra is Caffeine was made for lovers. So, get a cup! If you’re not a parent, the caffeine may be less of a baseline necessity and more of a buzzy delight, but you still deserve a nip of tea or a shot of espresso. Take part 2 of the date to your local ice cream shop or stop for personal pints at a grocery store before turning in for the night. Want to mix your ice cream and caffeine together? Opt for an afogato to satisfy your caffeine craving and your sweet tooth all in one.

Coffee & Ice Cream

Daiquiri Peplum Top // Allegra Dress // Logan Sweater Top // Blazer Suiting Skirt // Claire Mini Dress // Beginner's Luck Slouch Shorts

Summer Date Ideas: Target Shopping Challenge

This summer date night activity is best played with cold, hard cash. Start at Starbucks in Target. Synchronize your watches. Then split into opposite directions of the store and shop for one another. You each have 20 minutes and 20 dollars—tax included. If you pass the spending limit, you forfeit. Reconvene at Starbucks before your 20 minutes is up and trade Target bags. The best gift-giver wins! It’s a creative date idea that works great for the first or the fiftieth summer date night.

 Target Date

Wilderado Denim Mini // Glenn Crop Top // Cheyenne Mini Dress // Jenna Top // 90s Pinch Waist // City Cut Out Dress

Summer Date Ideas: Art Walk & Local Shopping

Shopping local is ALWAYS a good idea. Several cities offer a monthly or quarterly art walk in which you can experience the local art scene. There are usually vendors for more than just art, and it makes an idyllic li’l date night. This is one of my favorite summer date night ideas. If your community doesn’t host an art walk, make it a local hot spot night instead. Pick a restaurant, a sweet shop, and a bar. No chains allowed. Enjoy your time together as you support small business—and look damn good while doing it.

 Art Walk

Blue 3d Pineapple Crop Top // Emma One Piece // Zodiac Chemise Shirtdress // Stella Ribbed Top // Ziggy Shortalls // Flowers Embroidered Shirt

Summer Date Ideas: Racing Games

Come on Barbie, let’s go karting. For this date night idea, you’ll need to research go-kart tracks near you. If there aren’t any, take your racing game to a local arcade to settle things on the screen. As a last resort, conjure Mario and Luigi as you battle head-to-head in Mario Kart. The race is starting in 3..2..Go!

Racing Games

Erica Cardi // Black Lace Bodysuit // Rochelle Bodysuit // Checkered Tote Bag // Have to Have it Maxi Tee // Lotta Love Linen Trouser

Summer Date Ideas: Fitness Class

Burn calories as a couple! You’ll love the endorphin hit, and it will be a fun challenge to try something new to one or both of you. Imagine taking your partner with you to a hot yoga class or joining them for a cycle class. Not into those ideas? How about signing up for a pickleball lesson one evening? Keep in mind that you’re doing this to have fun and to connect! Catch one another’s eye as the instructor shares something that seems impossible, or powwow after the class to share what you love about each other’s bodies. Let’s get physical!

Fitness

Playa Shorts // Bike Short // Laguna Tech Short // Bella Bralette & Sunset Legging // Torrey Essential Tee // Grayson Crop & Sunset Legging

Each of these summer date night ideas requires an outfit in which you’ll feel like the best version of you. Of course, none of these cute summer date outfits needs to stay with its associated activity—pick and choose from the full list to create your perfect summer date night looks. You’re going to look amazing.

I never went to summer camp.

It feels good to get that off my chest.

Some of my friends were repeat summer campers. They would come back from two weeks of camp with braided friendship bracelets, swimsuit tan lines, and cafeteria chants. They were annoyingly upbeat.

Personally, I learned about summer camp the old fashioned way: By watching The Parent Trap

Maybe the lake is always bluer on the other side because I still daydream about a classic camp experience. Also, 11-year-old Hallie Parker influences my adult purchasing behavior (see: mustard duffel acquired in 2022).

But my childhood didn’t include a wooded adventure in the Northeast.

No, I created my own damn fun.

My siblings and I sorted through a sporting goods graveyard to invent games like “Backwards Baseball” and “Scooter Tennis Dodge Ball.” We set water sprinklers under the trampoline, caught tadpoles in giant puddles, and fell out of treehouses—the latter an unintentional occurrence.

Our summers weren’t polished, but they did build camaraderie between my sisters, brother, and me.

All that to say, I have a proposal for summer activities for kids in the remainder of 2023.

Let’s draw on our own classic summer experiences and introduce our kids to the best of them.

What summer activities for kids did you love to do when you were growing up?

Did you go to the library? Hit the snow cone hut? Make frozen bananas?

Play croquet? Draw on the sidewalk? Ride your bike?

This could be the year your kids form core memories in the sand box of summer (read: figuratively or literally)—and they could directly relate to your own core memories.

If you’ve been around the blog a time or two, then you know I’m not sending you out into the sunny wilderness without a guide. I’ve got you covered with the top summer activities for kids with nostalgic nudges for parents.

Here’s a list of fun summer activities for kids that you probably enjoyed when you were their age.

Summer Activities for Kids - Water Toys

Summer fun for kids begins with sprinklers. I remember running through the lawn sprinkler at a very early age, dodging stickers in the yard and launching over the rising water. Sprinklers are summer simplicity at its finest, and these inflatable giant unicorn and shark sprinklers elevate a classic summer favorite into an absolute dream. Add the creme de la creme of summer icons by tossing a beach ball into the mix and seeing kids’ delight as they use it as a shield from the spray. Another classic water toy gets an upgrade with these inflatable noodles in fairy or sea creature motif, and we’ll round out the water recommendations with this water play set. It’s giving 1990s Vacation Bible School. Do you see it, too?

Summer Crafts for Kids

To be (Lisa) Frank, crafts are cool. Summer crafts for kids in the air conditioning are even cooler. So while I’m very supportive of scavenging for wildflowers with your kiddos, I present to you the modern daisy chain. Made out of tissue paper, this giant flower garland requires some hands-on assembly that your littles will love to tackle in the craft corner. More summer crafts for kids that remind me of millennial childhood include this heart embroidery kit, Land Before Time 26’ roll of paper, and handmade sidewalk chalk.

Summer Games for Kids

How much fun would it be to introduce your kids to croquet? According to my research, croquet goes back to the Bridgerton era (the official term, I’m sure), making it an essential family activity for summer. Bocce is another absolute classic, and I’m dying over these foam beach bats in casa vintage black. Not the sporting type? Share the rules of pinball with your kids and play until you’ve mastered it.

Summer Activities for Kids - Outdoors

If you have a safe place to ride, bikes and scooters offer joy, exercise, and increased coordination for your kids. I should know—I was the co-creator of Scooter Tennis Dodge Ball. For kids who need a more stationary activity, I love this outdoor summer sand box (with canopy!) and the Little Helper Backyard BBQ Play Stand. They’re going to eat up these fun summer activities for kids.

Retro Summer Vibes for Parents

Take a trip to your teenage years outside of your therapist’s office with this inflatable flashback chair. In this mobile-friendly recliner, reminiscing about your sister’s Jonathan Taylor Thomas poster or your first family game of Spinner (Double 9 Dominoes) is suggested, but not required. Oh, and it doubles as a pool float! Grab a SunnyD from this retro Cooler Radio as you watch your kids interact with the summer outdoor activities for kids that make memories last a lifetime. Then, casually mention that your tie dye tank and trendy bucket hat aren’t on their first lap around the sun. The good ol’ days are back, baby.

Create Your Own Backyard Oasis What does the term “oasis” mean to you?

For me, it evokes cool water, lush greenery, and respite from the heat.

When I hear “oasis,” I’m thirsty for its possibilities.

Similarly, a backyard oasis draws me in with promises of peace, wellness, and rest—all available at the turn of a doorknob.

If you’re ready to tap into the refreshing vibes of a natural spring without a plane ride or a roadtrip, then these backyard oasis ideas are for you.

Fit for summer break, a backyard oasis will entice your children to experience nature in their own environment. With a diy backyard oasis, you’ll encourage your kids to say goodbye to screen time and hello to the great outdoors.

Adios to boredom, hola to discovery.

Au revoir to sensory overload, bonjour to serenity.

When creating your diy backyard oasis, we suggest focusing on four main elements:

  • • Earth
  • • Wind
  • • Water
  • • Wood

Earth

Leo Beach Set

Earth

Have you heard of “grounding” or “earthing?”

Zac Efron introduced me to the idea of it in his Netflix series, Down to Earth (and no, I’m not ashamed that it took Troy Bolton to awake me to this natural phenomenon). The intended benefits of earthing include improved sleep, reduced pain, reduced stress, better circulation, and more. One of the simplest acts you can take for your health, earthing occurs when you make direct contact with the surface of the earth. You can use your hands or your feet, and it’s recommended to spend 10–30 minutes per day connected to the ground in this way.

Whether or not you connect with this idea of grounding, creating an earthy space in your backyard oasis is a must. If you’re famous for your green thumb, you can go all out with an in-ground or raised garden bed. Container herbs are a fantastic addition, too, and many herbs (basil, lavender, rosemary, lemongrass, mint, etc.) double as bug repellents.

If you aren’t in your gardening era, you can still receive earthing benefits from playing with your kids’ beach toys in a covered sandbox or taking a walk with your bare feet in the grass. Just don’t forget your favorite sun hat and SPF while you’re connecting with the natural world.

    Wind

    TiiPii Beds

    Wind

The next step to luxuriating in a diy backyard oasis is to invite the wind to be a part of the story.

Our number one wind recommendation is to select a TiiPii Bed for your backyard. Not only will this add a layer of floating relaxation to your experience, but large TiiPii beds make a gorgeous focal point for your backyard oasis. As playful as they are beautiful, TiiPii Beds have the capability of free-hanging or suspending from a TiiPii Stand, and they are available in a variety of colors in fabrics. The Deluxe Large Sunbrella TiiPii Bed in Sand is a favorite of mine with its macramé finishing touches and attachable sheer net.

Other ways to harness the beauty of the wind are to dangle wind chimes from the branches of a tree, surprise your kids with bubble wands, or add meditative wind spinners to your backyard oasis.

    Water

Smocked Hipster Bikini Bottom // Ruffle One-Piece

    Water

    Do you have a pool?

You don’t have to have a swimming pool in order to round out your backyard oasis, but it doesn’t hurt. If you’re looking for backyard oasis pool inspiration on a small scale, Cowboy Pools in Austin is a fantastic place to start.

You can also add a water feature with a sculptural fountain or bohemian bird bath, or by switching on the sprinkler for the kids. In my dreams, my back porch is set up with water misters like they have at Six Flags Over Texas—my favorite attraction of the amusement park.

If you want to add even more water experiences to your backyard oasis, we suggest fun activities such as:

    • • Creating a target game with cardboard, paint, and a cooler full of water balloons
    • • Filling squeeze bottles with ice cold water and chasing your kids around for an icy game of tag
    • • Soaking a wash cloth in cold water (add your choice of essential oils if desired) and laying it across the back of your neck
    • • Grabbing your yoga mat and doing some water salutations

Make sure to dress for the occasion with a summer bikini, retro one-piece, or sports bra and bike short.

    Wood

Wiwiurka Wooden Balance Beams // Wiwiurka Toys Rainbow Swing

    Wood

The wood element of your diy backyard oasis can take up a small or large space.

Wiwiurka Wooden Balance Beams present your kids with a fun opportunity to develop agility, balance, and confidence, and they’re an aesthetically pleasing oasis addition.

Another option that lights up my inner child is this two-story playhouse with swing attachment. It’s made from furniture grade cedar wood, includes child sized cooking tools and play food, and encourages physical and mental development.

If you’re creating a small backyard oasis, this handmade pinewood rainbow swing is a burst of happiness for you and your kids.

Another exceptional way to bring on the rejuvenating vibes is to incorporate wood elements such as this artistic staircase tray to trolley snacks and sips from the kitchen to the intentionally peaceful space in your backyard.

    Summer Nights

    TiiPii Beds

    Summer Nights

By calling on each of the four elements of earth, wind, water, and wood, you’ll design a swoon worthy space to rest, relax, and rejuvenate in this summer. Your kids will explore with creativity, and you’ll delight in screen free moments out in the sun.

When the moon takes the sun’s place, your backyard oasis can transition to a family movie night by projecting a favorite film across a sheet hanging from a branch. This is also an opportunity to enjoy moon salutations on your yoga mat, read a book by twinkle light, or share a drink with your closest friends.

With just a splash of intention, your backyard can be the refreshing oasis of your summer dreams.

Baby Face Mineral Sunscreen Face Stick - SPF
Free of toxic sunscreen chemicals, the Baby Face Mineral Sunscreen Face Stick - SPF by Earth Mama Organics is our favorite sun shield for the little one! The cruelty-free Baby Face Mineral Face Stick (Broad Spectrum SPF 40) glides on smooth and sheer, and is infused with organic calendula and soothing organic aloe to keep that sweet baby skin soft and moisturized — along with kid and adult skin, too. It’s not only safe for babies, it’s safe for oceans, reefs and swimming pools.

Kids Uber-Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen Lotion - SPF 40
The Kids Uber-Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen Lotion - SPF 40 by Earth Mama Organics is a must-have for sensitive skins. Thoughtfully formulated so that it’s non-irritating and gentle for sensitive skin, this is a reef-friendly, non-toxic, cruelty-free sunscreen with non-nano zinc — sits on top of the skin rather than being absorbed, so it can scatter sun rays.

Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 25
What’s better than a cruelty-free tinted Mineral Sunscreen infused with exceptionally moisturizing organic argan oil to help repair sun damage? Not much. This sunscreen has all the power of non-nano mineral sunscreen, minus the pale cast — using just a hint of iron oxide for a tint that seamlessly blends with most skin tones. And protects using the perfect balance of non-nano zinc and high- SPF organic red raspberry seed oil, that sits on top of the skin rather than being absorbed, so it can scatter sun rays — without any toxic chemicals.

    Mom Essentials

    New mama essentials
    Stretch Mark Oil
Wind down after a day in the sun with this luxe stretch mark oil. Helps prevent and reduce the visual signs of stretching skin long after the baby has come earthside. Reduces redness, itchiness, and keeps your skin feeling calm. Hydrates skin and retains moisture giving you a natural glow. Easily absorbed leaving you clothing-ready.

It’s June — which for most of the US means that Summer is *unofficially* here — and it’s the perfect time for you to get outside with your kids. Spending time outdoors with your kids is so beneficial, but sadly, on the decline. Blame it on TV, smart phones, or video games — the average American child spends five to eight hours a day in front of a digital screen. The repercussions of too much screen time, at the expense of unstructured play in nature are detrimental to the well-being of children. So this year, the team at oldbazaaristanbul challenges you to spend 1,000 hours outside.

Spend more time in nature this Summer

It’s June — which for most of the US means that Summer is *unofficially* here — and it’s the perfect time for you to get outside with your kids. Spending time outdoors with your kids is so beneficial, but sadly, on the decline. Blame it on TV, smart phones, or video games — the average American child spends five to eight hours a day in front of a digital screen. The repercussions of too much screen time, at the expense of unstructured play in nature are detrimental to the well-being of children. So this year, the team at oldbazaaristanbul challenges you to spend 1,000 hours outside.

    What is 1,000 hours outside?

1,000 hours outside is a movement to encourage children and their families to spend more time outside and less time in front of screens. From their website: “The entire purpose of 1000 Hours Outside is to attempt to match nature time with screen time. If kids can consume media through screens 1200 hours a year on average then the time is there and at least some of it can and should be shifted towards a more productive and healthy outcome!”

Founded by Ginny Yurich, 1,000 aims to encourage families to track how much time they spend outside with nature — essentially gamifying something that is really good for you! The recommending time outdoors per day for children is 4-6 hours. We know, as parents ourselves, this sounds like a lot of time. But, the benefits of unstructured play outdoors has so many benefits for children — it’s certainly a goal worth striving toward.

    Benefits of play in nature

    1. Improved cognitive function
    2. More creativity
    3. Less sitting, more being active
    4. Less solitary, more interactions with peers
    5. Less depression and anxiety
    6. Increased attention span
    7. More vitamin D exposure helps reduce the risk of certain health issues
    8. Improved eyesight
    9. Exposure to natural light + lots of physical activity = better sleep
    10. Active kids are more likely to grow into active adults

And the benefits don’t stop with the kids. Adults spending more time outside will also reap the benefits — especially those related to health and well-being. So when you start planning what your Summer looks like this year, be sure to include lots of activities outdoors for you and your children to enjoy. We’re talking patio happy hours, rooftop lunch breaks, and finally escaping the gym. The golden rule of summer is that you have to say goodbye to treadmills and ellipticals, but in case that leaves you a little bit lost, we’ve gathered some outdoor workout ideas so you can break a sweat while soaking up every second of summer. And of course, we had to grab a few athleisure styles to go along with each option!

    Swimming

Shop the striped bikini from Boys + Arrows

There’s a reason why swimming is one of the best exercises that you can do for your body — the constant movement gets your heart rate up and the resistance of the water helps build your muscles, all while keeping your body and your joints safe. Swimming laps at the gym is already a step up from a boring cardio routine, but if you have access to a lake, ocean, or even outdoor pool, you won’t even feel like you’re working out. Check out our new Boys + Arrows swimwear to keep showing off your style while you’re at it.

    Bike Rides

Shop biker shorts from Spiritual Gangster

Now that bike sharing is a thing, going on bike rides just became so much easier. It’s such a great form of cardio, burns fat quickly, and gets your legs in tip-top shape. Now that you don’t have to go out and drop hundreds of dollars on a bike that you have to frequently maintain and store every winter, this is about as easy as can be. It’s also a great way to explore your city in a new way! If you're worried about spending the rest of the day sweaty after a bike ride, just make sure you pack your YUNI Shower Sheets so you can freshen up the second your ride is over.

Shop the waterless shower sheets from YUNI

    Outdoor Sports Leagues

In case you haven’t noticed, we are all about workouts that don’t feel like you’re working out. And at the top of that list is joining an outdoor sports league. Our favorite is beach volleyball — the resistance from the sand is great for your legs, and you’ll keep your heart rate up the whole time. Grab your favorite gals for a night of playing around instead of grabbing happy hour (or grab happy hour afterward), or join a league to meet new friends in your city!

shop the red sports bra from Spiritual Gangster

    Yoga in the Yard

When it comes to meditation and grounding yourself, doing it outside takes your zen to an entirely different level. Find a yoga studio near you that offers outdoor yoga, or keep an eye out for special summer events — a lot of parks will offer yoga classes. You can also work out on your own time, and run through your favorite yoga poses in the backyard.

Shop the high-waist leggings from Spiritual Gangster

    Park Strength Training

We’ve covered cardio, but don’t think that you still have to confine yourself to the gym in order to keep working on building strength. Find a park and all of a sudden you'll have the tools and the space that you need for outdoor strength training.

        1. Reverse lunges on a park bench

        2. Push-ups and tricep dips on a bench

https://oldbazaaristanbul.com/blogs/bohemian-mama-lifestyle-blog/party-like-its-the-4th-of-july 2019-06-27T15:32:00-07:00 2022-11-02T03:12:10-07:00 We're gonna party like it's the Fourth of July Anni Caylor We still aren’t sure how “4th of July” is even in our vocabulary right now, considering it was just March a few weeks ago (or at least that’s how it feels). But here we are. Summer has officially begun, and it's time to celebrate. That means a couple of days off of work, a sunny day, and all of the tips you need to host the ultimate 4th of July party.

    Drinks

    Popsicle Cocktails

Let’s really get back to the basics of summer. Namely, those weirdly delicious red, white, and blue Bomb Pops that made us a sticky mess in summers past. That’s right, we’re stocking our freezers with the old favorite, but we’re upping the ante this time around with champagne. This is the easiest of the cocktails we’re whipping up for our patriotic party, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be the most Insta-worthy.

    • Box of Bomb Pops
    • Bottle of Champagne

    1. Put the popsicles in a glass with the stick facing out.

    2. Fill the glasses with bubbly. Voilà!

    Firecracker Jell-O Shots

No good party is complete without some good old-fashioned Jell-O shots. Or at least, that’s what we thought in college, but the second we saw these cuties we knew we couldn't pass them up. They’re a bit more involved since you have to make them layer by layer, but the effort will be worth it since they double as a sweet treat after dinner. Plus, you can also make a booze-free batch for the littles.

    • 3 c. vodka
    • 1 box blue Jell-O
    • 1 box red Jell-O
    • 3 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
    • 3 c. boiling water
    • 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk
    • 1 jar maraschino cherries, drained

    Blue Layer

    1. Pour 1 cup of vodka into a large mixing bowl and sprinkle ½ of an envelope of unflavored gelatin on top, then let it sit for 2 minutes.
    2. Add in the blue Jell-O, pour in 1 cup of boiling water, and whisk together until the gelatin is dissolved.
    3. Let it cool for 5 minutes, then pour the mixture into small shooter glasses until each is ⅓ of the way full.
    4. Chill for 1 hour.

    White Layer

    1. Pour 1 cup of vodka into a large mixing bowl and sprinkle 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin on top, then let it sit for 2 minutes.
    2. Pour in 1 cup of boiling water, and whisk together until the gelatin is dissolved.
    3. Pour in the sweetened condensed milk and stir until it’s fully mixed.
    4. Let it cool for 5 minutes, then pour the mixture on top of the blue layer until the glasses are ⅔ of the way full.
    5. Chill for 1 hour.

    Red Layer

    1. Pour 1 cup of vodka into a large mixing bowl and sprinkle ½ of an envelope of unflavored gelatin on top, then let it sit for 2 minutes.
    2. Add in the red Jell-O, pour in 1 cup of boiling water, and whisk together until the gelatin is dissolved.
    3. Let it cool for 5 minutes, then fill the rest of each glass with the mixture.
    4. Chill for 1 hour.

When all of the Jell-O shots have set, add a cherry on top for decoration and get to celebrating!

    Watermelon Keg

We’ve all seen this modern marvel on Pinterest, but if you’re anything like us, you took one look, thought “I don't have 10 hours to dedicate to carving watermelons,” and moved on. Lucky for you, we’ve done the research and we can tell you that it’s super easy and you can be sure it'll be the star of the event. The only real prep work you’ll have to do is ordering a spigot so you can easily dispense the drinks, but of course, Amazon has your back.

    • 1 seedless watermelon
    • 1 bottle (750 ml) of your favorite rosé
    • 1 ½ c. orange vodka
    1. Cut a thin slice from the bottom of the watermelon rind, without cutting into the flesh, to give it a flat bottom to keep it sitting upright.
    2. Carve out a circle in the top to create a lid.
    3. Remove the lid, and then using an electric hand mixer or immersion blender, blend up all of the insides until completely pureed.
    4. Pour the watermelon puree into a separate cup, straining out pulp and seeds first.
    5. Insert the spigot, then pour the watermelon juice, wine, and vodka back into the watermelon.
    6. Refrigerate for 2 hours and then serve.

    Snacks

We all know that the entire purpose of the 4th of July is to enjoy as many hot dogs and handfuls of potato chips as you possibly can, so we aren’t here to tell you otherwise. All we’re saying is that you can also include some America-themed appetizers and desserts to the lineup.

    Berry Kabobs

This is another fun Pinterest-style treat, but considering how simple and quick it is to make, we couldn’t leave it out. They’re bursting with summer flavor and will be perfect to pass around before the rest of the snacks are ready to be served. The kiddos will love that they get some marshmallows out of the deal, and who doesn't love eating off of a skewer? We love serving them up with the American flag design, but you can also alternate berries and marshmallows for a simpler red, white, and blue design.

    • 1 package blueberries
    • 1 package raspberries
    • 1 bag mini marshmallows
    • Skewers
    1. On the first 5 skewers, put 4 blueberries, one mini marshmallow, one raspberry, one more mini marshmallow, and one more raspberry.
    2. On the next 7 skewers, alternate 4 raspberries and 3 marshmallows, to create a striped effect.
    3. Line them up with the blueberries in the top left corner (hello, stars!) and then finish the flag with the raspberry/marshmallow skewers.
    4. Add the rest of the berries and 'mallows to the remaining kabobs so you have plenty of extras.

    Watermelon Salad

We are all about a good watermelon salad, especially since we usually only get them when we are spending way too much money at a nice restaurant. But that's not the case any longer! This refreshing summer salad is as easy as it is delicious, and allows for customization so all of your guests are happy.

    • 1 baby watermelon
    • ½ c. fresh mint, chopped
    • ¼ c. red onion, thinly sliced
    • 12 oz. cherry tomatoes, halved
    • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
    • 2 Tbsp. lime juice
    • 1 tsp. pure honey
    • Salt and pepper (to taste)
    • Crumbled feta
    1. Cut the watermelon into bite-size chunks, and top with the fresh mint, onion, and tomatoes.
    2. In a separate bowl, whisk together olive oil, lime juice, honey, salt, and pepper.
    3. Toss watermelon mixture with the dressing, and sprinkle the crumbled feta on top.
    4. Serve and enjoy!

    Baked Brie

Surprise, surprise — in case you didn't yet realize it, we love bringing in that red, white, and blue scheme wherever we possibly can. And we also love including cheese in every meal we eat. And when we bring those two passions together, we get ourselves a fun little wheel of baked brie and fruit.

    • 1 wheel of brie
    • 6 strawberries, sliced
    • ½ c. blueberries
    • ¼ c. orange juice
    • 2 tsp. honey
    • Crackers for dipping (we love pretzel crackers most, but you can also sweeten things up with graham crackers)
    1. Preheat oven to 350°, and cut off the top rind of the brie.
    2. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until the brie is completely melted and bubbling.
    3. While the brie is baking, place the strawberries and blueberries in separate bowls, divide the orange juice and honey evenly between the bowls, and toss until all of the berries are coated.
    4. When the brie is done baking, immediately arrange the fruit in an American flag design on top and serve.

Now that our favorite season is finally here, it’s time to fill your wardrobe with nothing but one-pieces and bikinis because let’s be honest, that’s what we’ll all be living in for the next three months. And in case you aren’t sure where to start, we’ve gathered up our summer swim favorites for you.

    SAME Swim

When it comes to designer swimwear, this California-based swim line is the only one you need to know about. Not only do they feature the most gorgeous styles of handmade swimsuits, but each one is also made from Italian swim fabrics, giving you an unrivaled fit and feel wherever you go. The first swimsuit we added to our closet this summer? That gorgeous polka-dot bikini top and matching high-waisted swim bottoms — there’s nothing like a retro look to ring in sunny days.

    Boys + Arrows

We recently introduced Boys + Arrows into the lineup, and boy, oh boy are we excited. They describe themselves as troublemaking, whiskey-drinking, bikini-wearing hooligans, and we are all about it. Besides the wild spirit of the brand, these seamless swimsuits are also some of the comfiest we’ve ever worn. They fit perfectly and will keep you running around easily, whether you’re lounging poolside in Palm Springs or running through sprinklers with your minis. Oh, and did we mention that they have a shark jaw printed top and bottoms? Yeah, we should probably mention that.

    Beach Riot

Beach Riot is the ultimate in bold, yet ultra-chic swimwear. Their entire story revolves around rebelling from the norm and making waves, and with these California-cool swimsuits, they’re bringing that spirit of confidence to all of your summer style. If you're looking for full-coverage bikini bottoms and super comfy tops, Beach Riot takes the cake. We’re still swooning over the yellow matching swim set with those high-rise bottoms and the sport-style bikini top, and all we can dream about is a quick game of beach volleyball.

    Tori Praver

Considering the fact that Tori Praver grew up in Hawaii, it's no wonder that she’s an expert in all things summer. These stunning swim separates feature an iconic smocking technique that she created to keep them as comfortable, easy to move in, and incredibly flattering as can be. If we had to choose a pattern of the summer, I think we can all agree that it’s stripes, stripes, stripes. So make sure you don’t sleep on this yellow striped high-waisted bikini bottom and top combo. But don’t stop there, when you can also add the one-piece strapless floral swimsuit to your vacay lineup.

https://oldbazaaristanbul.com/blogs/bohemian-mama-lifestyle-blog/summer-styling-with-sancia 2019-04-24T16:58:00-07:00 2023-11-07T18:50:08-08:00 Summer Styling with Sancia Anni Caylor When it comes to effortless summer style, wanderlust seems to be the name of the game, with our new favorite brand really leading the pack. This Australian company was created to showcase the ideal mix of global influences and beachy Australian vibes. The story starts in 2013 with leather accessories (with brushed gold hardware that’s to die for), but lucky for us they decided to expand to apparel so we can fill our closets with the dreamiest pieces. We are head-over-heels in love with everything they have, but here are our top 5 summer wardrobe essentials.

    1. Statement Shorts

When the sun is shining and all there is to worry about is whether you’re going to spend your twelve hours of daylight at the beach or curled in the hammock with a new book, there’s only one appropriate uniform: shorts. We’re all for those trusty denim cutoffs that you’ve had for years, but once you slip on the Sabrina Shorts, you probably won’t want to wear anything else. Not only are they so comfy with the super relaxed fit, but also they showcase the official pattern of summer (at least in our opinion).

    2. Casual Blouse (that can be worn with anything)

Some people might think that button-down shirts are meant only for days in the office, but we are here to tell you that that's utterly and completely wrong. The Estelle Painters Shirt brings the perfect free-spirited style with the slouchy fit, and you can wear it in (approximately) a million different ways — we’re talking over your swimsuit on beach day, French-tucked into jean shorts, or tied at the waistline with your favorite jeans.

    3. Sunny Pants

In case you haven’t yet realized, mustard is the color of the season (and the official condiment of summer barbecues). Even better than brightening up any outfit, these high-waisted paperbag pants have a relaxed fit that will make it feel like you’re strolling around in your pajamas while making you look like you just came from a day in Paris. When we think of summer, we may have typical snack foods in mind – candy, chips, ice cream, and soda – all loaded with salt, sugar, and who knows what. Making your own treats puts you in control of what goes inside, giving you the opportunity to get creative and, most importantly, serve the kids something with nutritional value. Read on for 8 better-for-you alternatives to help kick unhealthy summer snacking habits and kick off the summer!

    Frozen Banana Smoothies

Instead of throwing away bananas that are too brown to eat, throw them in the freezer to use later as a smoothie base. For a chocolate banana smoothie, blend together 1 frozen banana, ½ cup milk, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 2 teaspoons of chocolate syrup. For a peanut butter banana smoothie, blend together 1 frozen banana, ½ cup milk, 2 teaspoons of peanut butter, and 2 teaspoons of honey. For a berry-banana smoothie, blend 1 frozen banana, ½ cup milk, ½ cup frozen berries, and 2 teaspoons of honey. Process until smooth and don’t forget to add ice!

    Frozen Fruit Bars

Fruits are known as nature’s best snacks. Despite how magical that sounds, it might take a bit of creativity to get kids to eat them. So turn them into refreshing fat-free treats that the littles will love on a hot summer’s day. When comparing to dairy-based frozen desserts, fruit bars are generally lower in calories. Make your own fruit bars by using a frozen popsicle mold. Pour 100 percent fruit juice or fruit purees and add chunks of fruit inside before stowing away in a freezer. Some fruits that taste great frozen include pineapples, grapes, and berries.

    Pizza Kabobs

Easy to make and easy to eat, these pizza kabobs give parents their kids something to nibble on while enjoying the great outdoors. Use toothpicks as mini skewers. A slice of pepperoni, an olive, small piece of cheese, and a square of whole wheat pita bread on both ends of the skewer are the ideal for a bite-sized pizza. The convenience of this snack lets you enjoy it at the beach or park.

    Skinny Strawberry Rhubarb Parfait

The natural sweetness of the strawberries in this parfait make it good for either breakfast or dessert! To make it, you’ll need 1 cup of yogurt of your choice, fresh strawberries sliced thinly, and rhubarb compote. As for the rhubarb compote, you’ll need to bring 4 cups of chopped rhubarb stalks, 1/3 cup of water, and 1/4 cup of maple syrup to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes before storing in the refrigerator. When constructing the parfaits, you can use Mason jars to look cute! You can either mix the yogurt with honey or maple syrup or leave it on its own. Add layers of rhubarb compote and freshly sliced strawberries before garnishing with a drizzle of honey or a curl of rhubarb. Chill or serve immediately for a sweet treat that won’t disappoint!

    Yogurt Melts

Delicious and easy to make, these yogurt melts are the perfect treat for all ages – from adults to babies starting on solids. Using your favorite yogurt and fruits pureed in a food processor or blender, you can make these for your next picnic. All you do is mix 2 cups of yogurt per 1 cup of fruits. Add drops of the mixture on parchment paper and set them in the freezer for a couple hours. Get creative with the flavors by trying different fruit and yogurt combos. You can also add raw honey, cinnamon, vanilla extract, spinach, kale, carrots, beets, or cucumbers.

    Ants on a Log

Here’s one way to get the littles to eat celery. Named in the 1950s, Ants on a Log is a snack made by spreading cream cheese, peanut butter, ricotta cheese, or any number of spreads on celery and placing raisins on top. For those who have peanut allergies or can’t handle other nut butters, such as almond or cashew butters, you can substitute the peanut butter for sunflower seed butter or coconut butter. Try golden raisins and honey for a twist on the classic that kids love!

    No-Bake Fruit Pizza

If your littles love Lunchables, they’ll love this healthier alternative! This snack resembles the popular mini snack pizzas without the preservatives and additives you can’t pronounce. Wholesome ingredients and a familiar yet appealing presentation make these no-bake fruit pizzas a fun and tasty summer bite. Use a whole-wheat tortilla, pita, or flatbread as the crust and natural nut butters or Greek yogurt as the sauce. Toppings could include fresh fruit, dried fruit, nuts, coconut, and granola. You can even portion each ingredient and put them in cupcake papers or cups and lay them out as part of a “topping bar.”  Your kids can will have fun customizing and assembling their own pizza, an awesome idea for play dates!

    All Veggie Nachos

Swap out salty tortilla chips for crispy bell peppers triangles! Add dollops of low-fat sour cream and a sprinkle of light shredded cheese of your choice. You can even dip these colorful “chips” in guacamole, hummus, or a homemade salsa. Top with corn, diced tomatoes, avocadoes, cucumbers, and cilantro. This snack is easily adaptable and looks great on the picnic table.

Though it may seem like a challenge to don effortless outfits while feeling cool and still looking cute, you may find it easier with a one piece. Read on for some of our favorites!

    The Maxi Dress

The versatility of maxi dresses makes it a summer staple. They’re great for pool parties or evening dinners by the shore. The full length elongates the body, giving the illusion of more height! Worn with sandals or dressed up with wedges, the Tropez Maxi by Show Me Your Mumu captures summer all in one piece with its blue palm leaves and pastel pink. The singular shoulder gives this dress a special summer flair.

Make the leather Mia Braid Strappy Sandals by Mia Shoes a summer essential! Thanks to its soft cushion insole, you can pair it with a maxi for maximum comfort.

    The Asymmetrical Dress

Unique and seductive by nature, asymmetrical dresses have a certain aesthetic about them. They exude playfulness and charm with their fashionable cuts. Dare to be different yet flirtatious in a dress that shows a little bit of leg. Stylish is an understatement when describing the crimson Wispers Slip Dress by Cleobella, pictured left, and the intricate patchwork of the Stevie Dress by Tigerlily, pictured right.

    The Midi Dress

The underrated midi dress deserves recognition this season! It’s not too long and not too short – ideal for showing off a cute pair of sandals and ankle wear. What we especially love about the Love You Midi Dress by Free People, pictured left, is the fit-and-flare shape, which makes the waist appear smaller. The cinch at the waist is a minor detail which makes a major difference, as it really flatters your figure. Another favorite of ours is the Edenia Midi Dress by Cleobella, featuring bold, colorful detail and a cut-out in the middle that says, “What better time than summer?”

Looking for an ankle piece to show off? The blue and gold beads of the In The Groove Anklet by Ettika will hypnotize you!

    The Off-the-Shoulder Mini Dress

Anyone can rock this style of dress during warmer weather as it allows you to flash some shoulders and a fancy neck piece. Accessorizing has never been easier! Our favorites include the El Paso Dress by Tigerlily, pictured left, and the Can Can Dress by Show Me Your Mumu, pictured right.

Accessorizing has just been made even easier with the Juliet necklace by Ettika! Its layers speak for itself!

    The Romper

Rompers are daunting without compromising comfort. They provide the right coverage for playing under the summer sun or striding the boardwalk. Cinching in at the waist, the romper suits all body types. We love the Rosa Romper by Spell & the Gypsy because of its fluttery sleeves and trim.

    The Jumpsuit

Like the romper, the jumpsuit has that coverage ideal for movement. Its full length adds height while appearing put-together. Wear one to chilly beach bonfires or evening cruises. Jumpsuits are statement pieces meant for summer! Take the Sabine Onesie by Tigerlily, pictured left, for instance. Or, you can opt for a casually simplistic look with the Hamsa Jumper by Spiritual Gangster, which is nice for an active day with the kids.
