If you’re like me, every December you get this super boost motivation to make magical memories with your kids. Forget the fact that you’ve barely been surviving your fall routine with school dress-up days, doctors’ appointments, gymnastics classes, and car tantrums. It’s December! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Who needs sleep when it’s the season of the sticks?

Regrettably, moms and kids do.

So while I support your attempts to make memories through Christmas activities and new family traditions, I’d also like to equip you for the winter days that are shorter than they look.

In this blog post on Christmas activities for kids, you’ll find realistic holiday experiences.

I’m not grinching out on you. These fun Christmas activities for toddlers, kids, and teens are indeed memory manufacturers—but they’re festive without the fuss. Try out these new holiday traditions that take less effort and less money than their idealistic counterparts and sleep in heavenly peace this holiday season.

Santa's Workshop at Home

Here’s your perfect Sunday afternoon Christmas activity for kids: Transform your living room into Santa's workshop. Grab the glitter—unless you have an “allergy” like I do—and glue. Pull out the construction paper, pom poms, safety scissors, and stickers. Your kids are Santa’s elves, and they need to have five kids’ Christmas gifts completed by dinnertime. Ten if they’re swift workers. Let their creativity flow from the Christmas craft supplies you have on-hand, or jumpstart the holiday activity with this wooden gingerbread house kit.

    Advent Calendar Countdown

If you read our last blog post on holiday home decor, then you got a sneak peek at 2023’s cutest Advent calendars for kids. These aren’t your grandma’s Advent calendars.

There’s a soft plush penguin Advent calendar for 3-year-olds and older to move a stuffed fish from day to day as they await Christmas morning. For older kids, you’ll find this Advent calendar that doubles as bohemian holiday decor and ticks all of the boxes for millennial motherhood. (Each tear-off pouch has a handmade wool ornament inside and is decorated with a question, encouragement, or intentional thought for your kids!) More Advent calendars are available in dinosaur theme, charm bracelets, and circus aesthetic. My recommendation: Order your Advent calendar now. If it comes with fillable pouches, plan to drop stickers, treats, or encouraging notes in each day’s pocket. That’s minimal effort for holiday magic every. single. morning.

      Holiday House Construction

If the wooden embroidery gingerbread house kit was a hit, then you can’t go wrong with an edible, sugary building experience. A great Christmas tradition for kids who love to build and parents who don’t yell bad words when their cookie roof slides off of the gingerbread walls for the fourth time in a row (I’m no longer allowed to participate in the Harrison family gingerbread house competition), gingerbread houses are more about the experience than the finished product. We found this homemade gingerbread house recipe if you catch the holiday baking bug. There are prepared gingerbread house kits in the holiday shop of most grocery stores for the rest of us.

        Christmas Movie Marathon

Suit up in your holiday pajamas for the next fun family Christmas activity. Unlike most Christmas traditions, this winter activity brings peace and rest to both parents and kids. Turn on a Christmas classic like “Home Alone,” a vibey flick like “Harry Potter,” or a Christmas comedy like “Elf,” to keep the holiday magic flowing at home. It is the recommendation of this author that you do not tell your kids there’s a “Cocomelon” holiday special unless you’d prefer to spend eleven bonus months singing carols with JJ and friends.

By the way, movie snacks are an absolute must for your family movie night, but don’t feel like you have to make them at home. This year, you can do less while enjoying more special moments with the family. It’s 100% okay to buy pretzels and popcorn and NOT dip them in white chocolate for movie night.

Build & Host an Indoor Snowball Fight

Host a family snowball fight as a new tradition, but first build your snow field! Inspire creativity in your kids by letting them be the gamemakers. They can craft intricate paper snowflakes or keep it basic with blanket forts and boxy obstacles to hide behind. For added mom magic, gather all of the packing peanuts you have and drop them from your second story as a light snowfall during the building phase. Next, you’ll work together to form a ton of snowballs from printer paper or recycled paper, and then you’ll split the teams. Once you’re ready, the indoor snowball fight begins! Winner gets extra marshmallows in their post-game hot cocoa.

DIY Christmas Ornaments & Holiday Market

Homemade Christmas ornaments are a rite of passage for bored kids on holiday break. Cultivate kids' creativity as they design their own unique ornaments and prepare them for market. Show them the designs for some of the ornaments you made as a kid—like sequins on popsicle stick stars, foam picture frames, and pipe cleaner candy canes. Then let them pretend they’re selling their Christmas tree ornaments at a holiday market. They’ll have a blast trading homemade ornaments for cold, hard, (pretend) cash.

Decorate Kids’ Christmas Trees with Core Memories

What are the 2023 moments your kids will always remember? Find out which moments are solidifying into core memories and then decorate a tree in their bedrooms with that theme. For instance, if your child had a huge soccer year, track down soccer ornaments for their personalized tree. Did they read a ton of books? Discover a new hobby? Connect with the animals at the zoo? Eat a ton of snacks? Shop for Christmas ornaments that fit their theme and let them express themselves by displaying it in their bedroom or play room. Here are some snack and animal themed ornaments to get you started

Have a Christmas Cookie or Christmas Cupcake Exchange

Every winter, I crave seasonal treats like pumpkin bread, firecrackers, and peanut butter blossoms. These recipes were holiday traditions for my family while I was growing up, and I love baking (and eating) them as continued family traditions with my own kids. Another takeaway from my nostalgic Christmases in the country is the holiday treat exchange that was an unspoken tradition among our neighbors. Friends would wind down our white rock driveway with holiday treats that were a part of their cultural traditions, and we would give them a tin of peanut butter blossoms or white chocolate popcorn in return. My husband’s family frosted Christmas themed sugar cookies with cookie cutters like these Santa & Reindeer cookie cutters. My daughters are cupcake lovers, so they’re excited to try out the festive house cupcake kit or nutcracker cupcake kit this year. While I’m less likely to knock on my neighbors’ doors today, I still like the idea of showing Christmas kindness through a homemade treat (free of common allergens) in their mailbox or on their front step.

Decorate the Doll House for Christmas

Send your kids to their happy place with a doll house or gingerbread that could use a festive touch. The holiday collection from Maileg invites little mice to shoop, shoop, shoop down the miniature slopes, toast one another at a tiny tea party, and rock around the LED light-up Christmas tree. Your kids will spend hours setting up their little house with cosy couches and decor, and then they’ll play with it for hours more. This is the lazy mom (lol, as if there was such a thing) Christmas activity because it requires very little interaction by you, and is the perfect diversion for when you need to hide the Christmas gifts from your kids.

As a mom, you’re used to facilitating the fun, but your kids and partner would enjoy spending more quality time with you instead of losing you to activity prepping and perfecting. Take a page out of the lazy mom’s playbook (again: there’s no such thing as a lazy mom), and choose realistic, intentional Christmas activities this year. Less is more for holiday togetherness magic.

Boho Holiday Home Decor // Merry & Bright

Holiday home decor in 2023 is playful! You can lean into a merry and bright look or stick to a muted color scheme, but it should bring a sense of winter whimsy either way. Topping the charts of our favorite holiday home decor is the Honeycomb Chandelier by Meri Meri. It’s the statement of the season with its classic Christmas icons made of paper and sparkly eco glitter. Plus, simple self-assembly is required, which is a fun way to get your big kids involved in the decorating for Christmas.

Another Christmas home decor piece we’re loving is this festive holiday tray which, coincidentally, looks beautiful alongside the chandelier mentioned above AND has a matching holiday doormat. For a holiday party, we’re adding more honeycomb decorations (That reindeer—OMG), peppermint candy surprise balls, and surprise Christmas trees to our carts. It’s giving merry. It’s giving bright. This is how you decorate for the holidays.

Boho Holiday Home Decor // Winter Beige

If you’re a neutral girly, then the Christmas color pops listed above may not be your cup of tea. For a more subtle holiday style, add these candy cane and peppermint swirl pillow covers to your armchairs. Give kids a scare—or adults a giggle—by keeping the Naughty / Nice lumbar pillow nearby and summon mistletoe vibes with a sign from the oldbazaaristanbul Home collection. No one gets you winter beige girls better than oldbazaaristanbul.

Speaking of winter beige, there’s a cozy sweater, sweater dress, shoulder bag, and pair of boots that you have to see. Quick, add them to your wish list (with links & sizes) or buy them now and let your partner know that Christmas is covered.

Boho Holiday Home Decor // Christmas Ornaments

As moms of humans and/or cats, our generation is getting smarter about Christmas ornaments. Knit Christmas ornaments, like these Christmas pretzels that I can’t get over, felt ornaments, and metal ornaments don’t pose the same breakage risk that the glass balls of our childhood did. Many families have moved to decorating two Christmas trees. One is set up in their office at work or in a closed-off space from the pets & kiddos. This Christmas tree can house your vintage Christmas ornament balls and keepsake Christmas tree ornaments (anyone else have a full suite of Noah’s Ark ornaments from the 90s?).

For your common space Christmas tree, consider spritzing it with this Awaken Mist as a cat deterrent (and a mood-lifter for you). You can also try placing orange peels or foil around the base of your tree to keep kitty from tree-hopping like Buddy the Elf. Then load it up with all of these kid-friendly ornaments and homemade garlands. Take a maximalist approach as you dress your bay window with fun Christmas tree ornaments or keep it streamlined with our winter beige collection.

                     Advent Calendars for Kids 2023

Listen, I want an Advent calendar this year. They are so fun for both kids and adults. Each morning of December, there’s a little treat. And we all deserve a little treat. When shopping for your girls’ Advent calendars, let us highly recommend the winter ballerina charm bracelet Advent calendar suitcase or enamel charm necklace Advent calendar from Meri Meri. My daughter received one from her aunt last year, and it was the biggest hit. We can’t remember what she opened on Christmas day, but we’ll never forget that adorable charm bracelet Advent calendar (and she’s already asking for another). If you’re on the hunt for an Advent calendar for boys, then look no further than the railway train Advent calendar or dinosaur Advent calendar. The dinosaur Advent calendar, especially, delivers hours of playtime for the month of December and can become a heartfelt Christmas tradition for your family to enjoy each year.

Make it a Boho Holiday Moment

Decorating for the holidays shouldn’t feel like a chore, but sometimes it does (especially if it all falls on mom). This year, intentionally set out to decorate as a family. Turn on Mariah Carey or Ben Rector, slip into some Christmas PJs, and create a winter whimsy—bright or beige—in your boho home.

*Maybe you politely suggest your kids won’t get their Advent calendars unless they help out with the holiday decorating? Just a thought.

Hold my PSL. It’s spooky season!

It’s time for kids’ Halloween costumes, Halloween house decor, and Halloween clothes for women. Individually wrapped candies don’t count as calories for the next couple of months, and apples are inedible unless dipped in caramel.

The inside of the house should carry a cinnamon scent at all times. Outdoors must maintain a brisk, around-the-fire-pit sensation and the Sanderson sisters are an acceptable icebreaker for every social engagement. Also acceptable: Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

You can now begin daydreaming about DIY Halloween costumes for kids. Then, I ask you to recall last year’s rush to buy a last-minute Paw Patrol costume for toddlers or a witch costume for girls and feel free to disregard that train of thought immediately.

This Hallow’s Eve, you can either be prepared, realistic, or both by shopping the Great Pretenders costumes for kids and Meri Meri Halloween decorations for parties and home in advance. In this post, you’ll find responsibly sourced costumes for kids like Harry Potter wizard capes, ballerina tutus, princess costumes, unicorn costumes, and more.

And great news: these costumes for girls and boys check all the boxes for aesthetically-inspired instagram moms (all of us?) and kids who are drawn to licensed characters like Snow White, Batman, Spiderman, and Cinderella. How do they do that?

                    These kids’ Halloween costumes are:

                    • - Over-the-top gorgeous
                    • - Made from quality fabrics
                    • - Uniquely suited for longterm play
                    • - Creatively positioned to encourage pretend play and imagination
                    • - Different from the Amazon and Target costumes other kids on the block are wearing

You’ll be able to keep an easy eye on your girls and boys as they flutter around in their butterfly wings, dragon capes, or blue bird feathers. And you’ll pack your smartphone full of trick-or-treat memories that will last a lifetime.

Join the fun with your own Halloween costume or grab a few spooky graphic tees for women.

Decorate the house with unique Halloween decor such as felt pumpkins and silly signs starting in early September to enjoy the magic for as long as you and your enchanting littles want to keep things creepy-crawly.

This season can be as playful or as spooky as you want it to be. Just make sure to lean into the magic before it vanishes—we won’t be in October orbit for another full year.

Best Kids’ Costumes for Halloween 2023

The most magical part of Halloween is seeing your children transported into a fairytale land by their Halloween costumes. Will they slay a dragon? Cast a spell to save the city? Join the circus? Attend a royal ball? To make kids’ costume shopping a bit easier—and more fun—we’ve split the costumes into categories below. Bear in mind each of our costumes is made from quality fabric, so you don’t have to worry about them ripping before you get to the trunk-or-treat situation. These costumes for kids including princess costumes, witch costumes, wizard costumes, dragon costumes, and more will remain their favorite dress-up clothes well after empty candy wrappers have littered the town square.

My favorite Halloween t-shirts are the ones that reveal a little bit about your personality so that the other space cowgirls or bad witches can see and appreciate your specific brand of spice. There’s nothing cuter than seeing your little monster fast asleep on a festive Halloween pillow with a smiley vampire as Halloween decor. I’m confident our Halloween decor options get better and better every year, including spooky signs, felt pumpkins, sherpa pumpkins—in leopard print!—Halloween banners, and ghost pillow covers. When I was a kid, my mom used a spider web fabric tablecloth year after year, and the thought of it gets me nostalgic for hot dog roasts and sticky caramel candies. Imagine the memories your kids will enjoy as they see you hang an Imani Collective banner up every year or place a Harvest Moon sign on the mantle each September (spooky season opening, as we like to call it).

Are you ready for back to school? It’s that rare time of year in which your kid’s backpack looks pristine and their lunch box can easily be found. The days are coming in which said backpack will have a questionable ink stain on the bottom and twisted straps. Your kid’s lunch box will go missing each morning around 7am—possibly because they hope you’ll rescue them with a mid-day Chickfila delivery.

While new cute backpacks and lunch bags are essential for the start of a new school year, so are back to school outfits, back to school reusable snack bags, and back to school confidence.

When we were younger, we learned the value of a great first impression.

By choosing cute backpacks and cool back to school clothes for your kids, you’re setting them up for success that spans the entire school year. It’s the bounce in their step, the sparkle in their eye, the outgoing “hi” in first period—all easier to access when they feel like they look amazing.

Your kids will put their best foot forward with a little help from the back to school shoes (Milo Boots & Mary Janes recommended) they love and a backpack that fields too many compliments to pack into it. Empowering them to pick out the sustainably-sourced outfits and back to school gear that jumps out at them is a fantastic way to send them into their best school year yet.

*Already started back to school? It’s not too late to give your kids a pep talk through eco-conscious school backpacks and lunch bags! What a fun pick-me-up to receive after a tiring first week or two. Snag their new favorite school outfit today to support your little learner.

                    Backpacks for School

Did you know it’s cool to be kind to the earth for our kiddos? Several of us discovered this truth well into adulthood, but the next generation is starting from an eco-conscious mindset. BTW, it’s also cool to customize.

These durable poly canvas backpacks with adjustable padded shoulder straps offer the best of both worlds! Pick out six patches to customize your school bag. It’s fun and functional—no more wondering which unicorn backpack belongs to your daughter. With a range of color pops and patches, you’ll create a personality-infused school backpack.

                    Back to School Lunch Bags

Lunch bags for school are a very important element—made more important when you just can’t get over how adorable they are. That’s how I feel about these NEW zipper lunch bags from Fluf. There’s something about this kids’ lunch bag that says she’s off to a meeting with the C-suite at lunch and a blowout after gym. It’s absurd to carry something this cute and iconic for a lunch bag. I work from home, and I want to start carrying my lunch in one of these lunch bags.

                    Reusable Snack Bags

Your most sustainable purchase for the entire back to school season is this reusable snack bag. These Flip Snack Bags by Fluf can be used HUNDREDS of times! That’s hundreds of plastic baggies per snack bag you’re keeping from the ocean or a landfill. They’re safe and non-toxic and fully machine washable. By choosing reusable snack bags, you can send your kid with a litterless lunch. You’ll want to grab a sandwich size reusable snack bag as well as a couple of snack size ones. If your child takes their lunch every day, it’s a good idea to get duplicates so that you can toss all of the snack bags in the wash along with their school uniforms or extracurricular outfits as needed.

Back to School Sales on Kids’ Clothing

My mom was a bargain back to school shopper. She almost never purchased an item at full price. I’m not her carbon copy—I like to do a lot of new arrival shopping and sprinkle in some back to school sales when they’re worth it. These, my friend, are worth it. You’ll find Rylee & Cru on sale for your little athletes, graphic tees to pair with patterned bottoms, and smart skirts and pants for the top of the class. Enough talk about the back to school sale: go add your organic fabrics to cart before another parent gets there first.

Big Feelings about Back to School

Before your little one embarks on a new adventure such as a new classroom, different teacher, or very first time at school, they may have a case of the butterflies. It’s a common feeling to be nervous about trying new things, and the experts at Slumberkins encourage kids to embrace their emotions while practicing new routines. The Harvest Sloth Kin Back to School Bundle | Routines includes a book called “Sloth’s First Day of School,” sloth stuffie, and affirmation card. Help ease your little one’s anxiety while building up their confidence with this back to school bundle, and keep the momentum rolling with the lunchbox love notes. The love notes are a tangible way for mamas and daddies to connect with their child midway through the school day even if they can’t be there in-person. Remind them who they are, and that you’ve got their back with a lunchbox love note.

Let’s face it, friends. Summer date nights bring a world of hurdles with them. How is it possible to look hot when your makeup is melting off your face like an ice cream treat in a sauna? I live in Texas, and in Texas, we have frizzy hair (due to the humidity), chafing thighs (due to sweat), and high blood pressure (that might be due to my in-laws). *Realtime proof: I just slid off of a barstool at a wine bar and there’s an embarrassing puddle of sweat to show for it. We are not hankering—to use some southern slang—for a “hot” date with our partners.

We want something cool. Cold. Frigid.

But I’m not naïve to the types of summers several of you enjoy further north.

Your summers are patio lunches and mountain picnics. Edison bulbs strung across outdoor spaces and board games. Beer gardens and corn hole.

And then there’s the beach bunch. With your boardwalks and your kayaks and your sunsets that even Pantone can’t compete with. You are the blondes of climate zones.

There is one things that brings all of us together, though: the quest for the perfect summer date night.

And that’s where we come in.

Below you’ll find summer date night ideas and summer date night outfits. These have been vetted by our very best to make sure you’re wearing the cutest summer outfits for your fun nights out. Consider our suggestions a BINGO card to mark through, or pick one, book the sitter, and get out of the house with your partner for a fun-filled summer night.

Summer Date Ideas: Barbie Movie Date Night

It was my husband’s idea for us to schedule a night to the new Barbie movie. We both love Ryan Gosling, and the trailer looks incredible. Honestly, I would have gone for the fashion, alone, but I think we’re in for a thrilling ride through Malibu with Barbie and Barbie and Barbie and Barbie and Ken and Ken and Ken, etc. I may not have a dream closet of my own, but if I did, these summer date night outfits would absolutely be in it. Which one will you wear to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film?

                    Summer Date Ideas: Patio Picnic

No patio is off-limits here. Drop in on a restaurant you’ve been eyeing, pop into a new wine bar, or borrow your neighbor’s covetable back porch. This is the date that takes you out of routine and into the throes of Paris. Make sure to pack a charcuterie spread and bubbles. This summer date idea is trés magnifique—and so are these summer date outfits.

Summer Date Ideas: Top Golf or Putt Putt

Who’s up for a round of golf? Now, if you’re as competitive as me, it can be advantageous to enter into this perfectionistic game with a drink in your hand. My partner and I are huge fans of Top Golf, where we usually indulge in burgers and beers—it’s the diet of our ancestors—and have a fun summer date night. I’m confined to the belief that mini golf requires a mini dress, so please peruse the following picks for cute summer date outfits that are up to par (Don’t forget the bike shorts).

Summer Date Ideas: Skittle-Themed Night In

Homebodies of the night, you are seen. There’s nothing wrong with preferring a date night at home. The only danger is your *special night in turning into a *regular night. If you’re in your normal space, It can be tempting to creak your laptop open to check a work email or fold the laundry that’s covering the best seat in the house. My advice is to draw the boundaries early, get on the same page, and add a little magic. For this staying-in summer date idea, you’ll need at least one bag of Skittles. Original, Wild Berry, and Tropical are all welcome here. The concept is simple: Take turns guessing the flavor. For a sexy twist, assign a penalty for guessing wrong. Think Friends: The One at the Beach for inspiration.

Summer Date Ideas: Caffeine & Ice Cream

It’s a widely accepted fact that parents cannot stay up past 10:30pm. Honestly, the closest we’re getting to midnight is Taylor Swift’s album, and most of us are a-okay with that—except when it comes to summer date nights. Our parental mantra is Caffeine was made for lovers. So, get a cup! If you’re not a parent, the caffeine may be less of a baseline necessity and more of a buzzy delight, but you still deserve a nip of tea or a shot of espresso. Take part 2 of the date to your local ice cream shop or stop for personal pints at a grocery store before turning in for the night. Want to mix your ice cream and caffeine together? Opt for an afogato to satisfy your caffeine craving and your sweet tooth all in one.

                    Coffee & Ice Cream

Summer Date Ideas: Target Shopping Challenge

This summer date night activity is best played with cold, hard cash. Start at Starbucks in Target. Synchronize your watches. Then split into opposite directions of the store and shop for one another. You each have 20 minutes and 20 dollars—tax included. If you pass the spending limit, you forfeit. Reconvene at Starbucks before your 20 minutes is up and trade Target bags. The best gift-giver wins! It’s a creative date idea that works great for the first or the fiftieth summer date night.

Summer Date Ideas: Art Walk & Local Shopping

Shopping local is ALWAYS a good idea. Several cities offer a monthly or quarterly art walk in which you can experience the local art scene. There are usually vendors for more than just art, and it makes an idyllic li’l date night. This is one of my favorite summer date night ideas. If your community doesn’t host an art walk, make it a local hot spot night instead. Pick a restaurant, a sweet shop, and a bar. No chains allowed. Enjoy your time together as you support small business—and look damn good while doing it.

                    Summer Date Ideas: Racing Games

Come on Barbie, let’s go karting. For this date night idea, you’ll need to research go-kart tracks near you. If there aren’t any, take your racing game to a local arcade to settle things on the screen. As a last resort, conjure Mario and Luigi as you battle head-to-head in Mario Kart. The race is starting in 3..2..Go!

                    Summer Date Ideas: Fitness Class

Burn calories as a couple! You’ll love the endorphin hit, and it will be a fun challenge to try something new to one or both of you. Imagine taking your partner with you to a hot yoga class or joining them for a cycle class. Not into those ideas? How about signing up for a pickleball lesson one evening? Keep in mind that you’re doing this to have fun and to connect! Catch one another’s eye as the instructor shares something that seems impossible, or powwow after the class to share what you love about each other’s bodies. Let’s get physical!

I never went to summer camp. It feels good to get that off my chest. Some of my friends were repeat summer campers. They would come back from two weeks of camp with braided friendship bracelets, swimsuit tan lines, and cafeteria chants. They were annoyingly upbeat. Personally, I learned about summer camp the old fashioned way: By watching The Parent Trap

Personally, I learned about summer camp the old fashioned way: By watching The Parent Trap

Maybe the lake is always bluer on the other side because I still daydream about a classic camp experience. Also, 11-year-old Hallie Parker influences my adult purchasing behavior (see: mustard duffel acquired in 2022).

But my childhood didn’t include a wooded adventure in the Northeast.

No, I created my own damn fun.

My siblings and I sorted through a sporting goods graveyard to invent games like “Backwards Baseball” and “Scooter Tennis Dodge Ball.” We set water sprinklers under the trampoline, caught tadpoles in giant puddles, and fell out of treehouses—the latter an unintentional occurrence.

Our summers weren’t polished, but they did build camaraderie between my sisters, brother, and me.

All that to say, I have a proposal for summer activities for kids in the remainder of 2023.

Let’s draw on our own classic summer experiences and introduce our kids to the best of them.

What summer activities for kids did you love to do when you were growing up?

Did you go to the library? Hit the snow cone hut? Make frozen bananas?

Play croquet? Draw on the sidewalk? Ride your bike?

This could be the year your kids form core memories in the sand box of summer (read: figuratively or literally)—and they could directly relate to your own core memories.

If you’ve been around the blog a time or two, then you know I’m not sending you out into the sunny wilderness without a guide. I’ve got you covered with the top summer activities for kids with nostalgic nudges for parents.

Here’s a list of fun summer activities for kids that you probably enjoyed when you were their age.

Summer Activities for Kids - Water Toys

Summer fun for kids begins with sprinklers. I remember running through the lawn sprinkler at a very early age, dodging stickers in the yard and launching over the rising water. Sprinklers are summer simplicity at its finest, and these inflatable giant unicorn and shark sprinklers elevate a classic summer favorite into an absolute dream. Add the creme de la creme of summer icons by tossing a beach ball into the mix and seeing kids’ delight as they use it as a shield from the spray. Another classic water toy gets an upgrade with these inflatable noodles in fairy or sea creature motif, and we’ll round out the water recommendations with this water play set. It’s giving 1990s Vacation Bible School. Do you see it, too?

                    Summer Crafts for Kids

To be (Lisa) Frank, crafts are cool. Summer crafts for kids in the air conditioning are even cooler. So while I’m very supportive of scavenging for wildflowers with your kiddos, I present to you the modern daisy chain. Made out of tissue paper, this giant flower garland requires some hands-on assembly that your littles will love to tackle in the craft corner. More summer crafts for kids that remind me of millennial childhood include this heart embroidery kit, Land Before Time 26’ roll of paper, and handmade sidewalk chalk.

                    Summer Games for Kids

How much fun would it be to introduce your kids to croquet? According to my research, croquet goes back to the Bridgerton era (the official term, I’m sure), making it an essential family activity for summer. Bocce is another absolute classic, and I’m dying over these foam beach bats in casa vintage black. Not the sporting type? Share the rules of pinball with your kids and play until you’ve mastered it.

Summer Activities for Kids - Outdoors

If you have a safe place to ride, bikes and scooters offer joy, exercise, and increased coordination for your kids. I should know—I was the co-creator of Scooter Tennis Dodge Ball. For kids who need a more stationary activity, I love this outdoor summer sand box (with canopy!) and the Little Helper Backyard BBQ Play Stand. They’re going to eat up these fun summer activities for kids.

                    Retro Summer Vibes for Parents

Take a trip to your teenage years outside of your therapist’s office with this inflatable flashback chair. In this mobile-friendly recliner, reminiscing about your sister’s Jonathan Taylor Thomas poster or your first family game of Spinner (Double 9 Dominoes) is suggested, but not required. Oh, and it doubles as a pool float! Grab a SunnyD from this retro Cooler Radio as you watch your kids interact with the summer outdoor activities for kids that make memories last a lifetime. Then, casually mention that your tie dye tank and trendy bucket hat aren’t on their first lap around the sun. The good ol’ days are back, baby.

Create Your Own Backyard Oasis What does the term “oasis” mean to you?

For me, it evokes cool water, lush greenery, and respite from the heat.

When I hear “oasis,” I’m thirsty for its possibilities.

Similarly, a backyard oasis draws me in with promises of peace, wellness, and rest—all available at the turn of a doorknob.

If you’re ready to tap into the refreshing vibes of a natural spring without a plane ride or a roadtrip, then these backyard oasis ideas are for you.

Fit for summer break, a backyard oasis will entice your children to experience nature in their own environment. With a diy backyard oasis, you’ll encourage your kids to say goodbye to screen time and hello to the great outdoors.

Adios to boredom, hola to discovery.

Au revoir to sensory overload, bonjour to serenity.

When creating your diy backyard oasis, we suggest focusing on four main elements:

                    • • Earth
                    • • Wind
                    • • Water
                    • • Wood

                    Earth

                    Leo Beach Set

                    Earth

Have you heard of “grounding” or “earthing?”

Zac Efron introduced me to the idea of it in his Netflix series, Down to Earth (and no, I’m not ashamed that it took Troy Bolton to awake me to this natural phenomenon). The intended benefits of earthing include improved sleep, reduced pain, reduced stress, better circulation, and more. One of the simplest acts you can take for your health, earthing occurs when you make direct contact with the surface of the earth. You can use your hands or your feet, and it’s recommended to spend 10–30 minutes per day connected to the ground in this way.

Whether or not you connect with this idea of grounding, creating an earthy space in your backyard oasis is a must. If you’re famous for your green thumb, you can go all out with an in-ground or raised garden bed. Container herbs are a fantastic addition, too, and many herbs (basil, lavender, rosemary, lemongrass, mint, etc.) double as bug repellents.

If you aren’t in your gardening era, you can still receive earthing benefits from playing with your kids’ beach toys in a covered sandbox or taking a walk with your bare feet in the grass. Just don’t forget your favorite sun hat and SPF while you’re connecting with the natural world.

                      Wind

                      TiiPii Beds

                      Wind

The next step to luxuriating in a diy backyard oasis is to invite the wind to be a part of the story.

Our number one wind recommendation is to select a TiiPii Bed for your backyard. Not only will this add a layer of floating relaxation to your experience, but large TiiPii beds make a gorgeous focal point for your backyard oasis. As playful as they are beautiful, TiiPii Beds have the capability of free-hanging or suspending from a TiiPii Stand, and they are available in a variety of colors in fabrics. The Deluxe Large Sunbrella TiiPii Bed in Sand is a favorite of mine with its macramé finishing touches and attachable sheer net.

Other ways to harness the beauty of the wind are to dangle wind chimes from the branches of a tree, surprise your kids with bubble wands, or add meditative wind spinners to your backyard oasis.

                      Water

Smocked Hipster Bikini Bottom // Ruffle One-Piece

                      Water

                      Do you have a pool?

You don’t have to have a swimming pool in order to round out your backyard oasis, but it doesn’t hurt. If you’re looking for backyard oasis pool inspiration on a small scale, Cowboy Pools in Austin is a fantastic place to start.

You can also add a water feature with a sculptural fountain or bohemian bird bath, or by switching on the sprinkler for the kids. In my dreams, my back porch is set up with water misters like they have at Six Flags Over Texas—my favorite attraction of the amusement park.

If you want to add even more water experiences to your backyard oasis, we suggest fun activities such as:

                      • • Creating a target game with cardboard, paint, and a cooler full of water balloons
                      • • Filling squeeze bottles with ice cold water and chasing your kids around for an icy game of tag
                      • • Soaking a wash cloth in cold water (add your choice of essential oils if desired) and laying it across the back of your neck
                      • • Grabbing your yoga mat and doing some water salutations

Make sure to dress for the occasion with a summer bikini, retro one-piece, or sports bra and bike short.

                      Wood

Wiwiurka Wooden Balance Beams // Wiwiurka Toys Rainbow Swing

                      Wood

The wood element of your diy backyard oasis can take up a small or large space.

Wiwiurka Wooden Balance Beams present your kids with a fun opportunity to develop agility, balance, and confidence, and they’re an aesthetically pleasing oasis addition.

Another option that lights up my inner child is this two-story playhouse with swing attachment. It’s made from furniture grade cedar wood, includes child sized cooking tools and play food, and encourages physical and mental development.

If you’re creating a small backyard oasis, this handmade pinewood rainbow swing is a burst of happiness for you and your kids.

Another exceptional way to bring on the rejuvenating vibes is to incorporate wood elements such as this artistic staircase tray to trolley snacks and sips from the kitchen to the intentionally peaceful space in your backyard.

                      Summer Nights

                      TiiPii Beds

                      Summer Nights

By calling on each of the four elements of earth, wind, water, and wood, you’ll design a swoon worthy space to rest, relax, and rejuvenate in this summer. Your kids will explore with creativity, and you’ll delight in screen free moments out in the sun.

When the moon takes the sun’s place, your backyard oasis can transition to a family movie night by projecting a favorite film across a sheet hanging from a branch. This is also an opportunity to enjoy moon salutations on your yoga mat, read a book by twinkle light, or share a drink with your closest friends.

With just a splash of intention, your backyard can be the refreshing oasis of your summer dreams.

Mother’s Day is almost here and it’s time to air our grievances regarding:

                      1. 1. Motherhood
                      2. 2. Mother’s Day

Truthfully, I have a plethora of silly grievances about motherhood and few gut-wrenching complaints. But when it comes to Mother’s Day, I have real frustrations.

First, why am I always stuck with a carnation from my church on Mother’s Day? Could they not just give me cash? Second, are runny eggs and fingerprinted avocado toast really the best way to start out a special day? And finally, why do I feel so much pressure to prove that I’m enjoying the day my family put together for me—keeping my true emotions tucked away—when they genuinely want me to feel celebrated?

Wouldn’t it just be easier if I let them know—in advance—what would really make my day this Mother’s Day?

In order to do that, I would have to carve out time to:

                      1. 1. Figure out what I want
                      2. 2. Ask for it

I’m not usually very good at these two things, and I get the feeling this is universally true about moms.

But clearly we can do hard things. We do them all the time for our kids.

So, this Mother’s Day, let’s take the counterintuitive path and put ourselves first (Reminder: That’s what the day is about! We’re not being selfish.)

We’ll do it as a collective: Moms for Mother’s Day (Embracing the Holiday Meant for Us).

And we’ll have fun while we’re at it.

In the spirit of maternal candor, I’m also sharing some of my inner thoughts and confessions below. Maybe you’ll connect with them, too.

                      Confessions of a Millennial Mom
My kid eats Cheetos and peanut butter for breakfast.
I have mom guilt about everything.
I think my big kid—the smart one—got Strep from licking a toy at Target.
I encourage my youngest kid’s mispronunciations and she might say “ramoon” instead of “maroon” for the rest of her life.
Crawling into bed with my kids makes me feel safe.
I smell fever on my kids’ breath before I feel it on their foreheads.
My kids don’t know what cuss words are so I let them sing them in song lyrics.
I bathe my kids almost as rarely as I bathe myself.
I get happy feelings when I look at old photos.
I get sad feelings when I look at old photos.
I wish my kids were as difficult for my husband as they are for me.
I think childbirth gave me claustrophobia.
I think the Starbucks drive-thru should be reserved for moms with young children.
I worry my sexy audiobook will automatically start playing in the car instead of our Kidz Bop playlist.
I steal socks from my 5-year-old.
Sometimes I’m desperate to get out of my house without my kids, but when the opportunity shows up, I don’t want to leave them.
I’m more open about puberty with my kids at age 3 than my parents were with me at age 13.
People keep telling me I should give myself a break.

There’s one feeling that I wish could be bottled up for safe keeping: arriving home from a trip and finding a CLEAN house.

Around our East Texas home, that ambiance is experienced once in a blue moon. And by blue moon, I mean only when my daughters’ school schedules align and I have a day off from work before the trip.

That’s when my home organization game is ace—when no one is following me around with the wrong end of an Annie’s organic cheddar bunnies bag and a Capri Sun’s crashing waves.

But with a little spring cleaning and DIY home organization, I’m optimistic that I can capture that clean windows, sparkling sink, just-home-from-paradise feeling and have it linger all spring and summer long.

What’s more, I’ve decided to view this spring’s cleaning session as self-care for my home.

Now, when I’m enjoying self-care for my self (as the term typically applies), it’s all about the product I’m using and the space I give myself to fully let go of what’s holding me down.

For example, if my self-care routine includes a cup of coffee, it cannot be a Keurig cup or a fast food drive-thru of caffeine.

I need the good stuff for the experience to qualify as self-care.

We’re talking single-origin black coffee that was sustainably-farmed, expertly roasted, and intentionally prepared with a pour-over method and an overarching blueberry tasting note. Also acceptable: a sweetened condensed milk latte with sparkly confetti toppings.

What does that have to do with spring cleaning?

                      More than you'd think.

Intentionally spring cleaning the house can fit the self-care bill for your family’s HQ if you clean, organize, spritz, and style with products that you love—not with the chemical solutions pushed by big box stores.

By using sustainable cleaning products and tools that are safe for you to breathe—and wonderful to smell—you’ll create a more inviting home and turn this springtime chore into a purpose-filled activity.

Consider this post your PLEASE READ BEFORE SPRING CLEANING guide, as you’ll probably want to purchase a few cleaning tools and storage supplies that will make your experience 1000x easier (and more enjoyable!).

Below we’re sharing our organization tips for home, as well as some spring cleaning tips to keep your home feeling fresh, smelling like citrus—or lavender, vanilla, jasmine, lemon créme, or leather—and looking like a Pinterest dream.

Follow along to give your home some self-care, and experience the cloud-like comfort of living daily life in a spring cleaned space.

                      • - Get rid of storage containers or tumblers with missing pieces (lids, straws, etc.)
                      • - Donate small kitchen appliances you haven’t used in 2+ years

                      • - Wipe down walls, paying special attention to splash zones
                      • - Remove tester spaghetti noodles from walls (This may only apply to me)
                      • - Clean out the silverware drawer (and all other drawers, but this one is top priority)
                      • - Water herb plants—repot if they’ve outgrown their planters
                      • - Sweep floor, including any gaps between appliances and/or cabinets
                      • - Mop floor
                      • - Replace kitchen brushesdish drainer, dish traydish soap and hand cream set, and tea towels.

This sounds like a lot of work, but by setting the vibes with the right scent and soundtrack, you’ll dance your way through the tough stuff and create a refreshed space for yourself and your family.

Suggested Soundtrack: True Crime Podcast or Re-Watch Podcast (My faves are Office Ladies and Drama Queens)

Recommended Room Scent: Cabana, inspired by The Ritz Carlton

Fun fact: A few years ago, I listened to a podcast on cleaning the bathroom. The content helped me to take on bathroom clean-up with courage and determination. Trust me—by following this cleaning philosophy and incorporating the bathroom cleaner into your regular routines, you’ll replace potentially icky vibes with beach sensations in the powder room.

                      Bathroom Spring Cleaning Checklist

                      • - Lay a full size bath towel on the floor of the bathroom
                      • - Pick up every item sitting on a surface—including a shower ledge—and place it on the towel
                      • - Bundle up the towel and move it outside of the bathroom (Now you have a clean slate to start cleaning)
                      • - Clean out cabinets
                      • - Wipe down mirrors and windows
                      • - Clean showers and bathtubs
                      • - Wipe down surfaces
                      • - Clean toilet
                      • - Sweep floor
                      • - Mop floor
                      • - Wash bathmats
                      • - Unfold your towel to move small items back to their spots on the bar or in the shower
                      • - Add new organization and functionality to the space with crates and baskets

My favorite additions of these home organizing ideas are the small and medium folding crates in the color salmon. They’re stackable, fold flat-able, and can add so much cheer to my little ones’ bathroom—an aesthetic pairing to the cabana breeze brought about by the Hotel Collection

                      Spring Cleaning Tips: Bedroom Edition

Suggested Soundtrack: Midnights by Taylor Swift (Obviously)

Recommended Room Scent: Rest Kit—Sleep, Retreat, Dusk & Grove

The bedroom is where the magic happens. And by magic, we mean sleep (What were you thinking?). Spring cleaning the bedroom means dusting those blinds and fans, refreshing the linens, sorting through the closet, and taking care of any under-the-bed dust bunnies. In my own experience, I’ve discovered that a restful night sleep makes my fine lines appear smoother. If that’s not motivation to take on the bedroom spring cleaning list, then I don’t know what is.

                      Bedroom Spring Cleaning Checklist

                      • - Dust ceiling fans and blinds
                      • - Dust tvs and wall decor
                      • - Clean out nightstand drawers
                      • - Sort through dressers
                        • - Toss out any underclothes or socks with holes or stains
                        • - Set aside unwearable t-shirts with nostalgic value to add to a keepsakes box
                        • - Add other clothes you never reach for to a donate box
                      • - Clean out closet
                        • - If you haven’t picked a clothing item up in a year, consider donating it (There are some special occasion exceptions)
                        • - Donate extra jackets, coats, and blankets
                      • - Clean windows and mirrors
                      • - Wipe down walls and doorknobs
                      • - Dust behind furniture
                      • - Clean under the bed
                      • - Wash mattress protector
                      • - Replace worn out pillows
                      • - Sweep or vacuum the floor
                      • - Refill your humidifier or add the Architectural Digest award-winning Cloud by Vitruvi to your nightstand

Spring cleaning is an opportunity to set your intentions for your bedroom. Last spring, my sister gifted a nightstand kit to me that included a lip balm and luxurious hand cream. As the poster child for dehydration, I was immediately drawn to a new wellness ritual that could offset dryness. I reached for my lip balm and hand cream religiously, and my body was better for it. Other options to create a sacred space in your bedroom are a designated water bottle or color-coordinated diffuser.

Spring Cleaning Tips: Living Room, Playroom, Mudroom, Laundry Room, Common Areas

                      Suggested Soundtrack: Romantic Comedy Audiobook

Recommended Room Scent: Mystify, a garden party for the senses

The remaining rooms are going to receive similar treatment to those above. They’ll get dusted, swept, mopped, window-washed, etc. After all of this dusting and mopping, your family is going to be breathing cleaner air and dealing with way less allergies. Hooray!

As you’re spring cleaning these common spaces, look out for items that don’t deserve a spot in your house anymore. For clandestine missions—like making your kids’ artwork disappear—we suggest waiting until garbage day to put it directly in the bin. Somehow your little ones will still figure it out, but it’s your best defense against 48 identical butterfly drawings.

Throw pillows not working for you? Throw ‘em out. Extra linens you’ve never touched? Donate them. Wall decor you received as an unregistered wedding gift? Get it out of here. These are your spaces. Make them work for you.

Don’t forget to stock up on cleaning supplies and solutions to effectively refresh these high-traffic areas.

                      Common Areas Spring Cleaning Checklist

                      Spring Cleaning Challenge

As you give your home some self-care with spring cleaning and home organizing, we hope you’ll find the experience meditative, purposeful, and—at times—fun.

Pull in your partner to spring clean the master bathroom.

Send your kids on a scavenger hunt (aka spring cleaning checklist adventure) in the playroom. Give them the task of organizing their toys with baskets, toy chests, and book racks to cut the clutter.

Join together to clean all of the windows.

The spring cleaning self-care experience can be one that’s good for your house, and for the people who make it a home.

When you’re newly expecting, there’s a shopping phenomenon that occurs.

Baby clothes—seemingly inanimate objects—start leaping into your cart at Target.

Affecting most moms-to-be at a moderate level, grandmothers report the anomaly occurring frequently and in large quantities.

The only way to stop the barrage of baby socks, baby dresses, and baby onesies is to get organized with a baby registry list.

There’s no wrong way to build a baby registry. Some parents take a minimal approach, and others are more maximal.

Today, we’re sharing our take on baby registry essentials.

These are the items you’ll want checked off your list first. They won’t inspire buyer’s remorse (like those Target baby clothes that wink and whistle as they stroll past the self-checkout scanner).

No, these online baby registry items have been selected by real moms so that you can be certain they’re worthy purchases for you or your gift-givers.

By creating your online baby registry at myregistry.com or babylist.com, you can add products from any retailer. This is a great way to register for the exact brand and product you want instead of searching for substitutes available from big box stores.

Now that you’re up-to-date on online baby registry etiquette, let’s get into what you really need to take care of your baby—and yourself—as you move into an amazing new phase as a family.

                      Baby Registry Must Haves: Wearables

In our experience, zipper pajamas are the only way to go for 0–3-month-olds.

You’ll be changing 10+ diapers per day early on, and convenience is key. Footed, two-way zipper onesies are the easiest way to keep your little one comfortable and diaper-change ready.

Trust us that you do not want to wade through overskirts and leggings and vests while dealing with a wiggly baby’s full diaper.

For baby’s gentle skin, we recommend going with an ethically made bamboo or organic cotton pair of zipper pjs.

You’ll also want to keep a bonnet or hat on their head nonstop in the early days to keep them warm and snuggly.

*Did you know pediatricians recommend keeping your newborn’s room between 68 and 72 degrees? That’s much warmer than my 38 weeks pregnant body desired (64 degrees), but I adapted for my baby girl.

Another good tip is to choose onesies that include fold over hand mitts.

Early on, you’ll want to keep your cub from accidentally scratching his or her face, so it’s best to keep those claws covered. While big box stores will suggest baby mittens, the mitt separates almost never stay on your newborn’s hands and will absolutely get lost behind the couch or in the dryer. Skip the individual mitts and go for fold-over onesies.

If you end up needing a mitt in a pinch, we recommend using baby socks instead. You’ll already have these on-hand (see what we did there), and they’re less likely to fall off.

Here are a few of our most recommended options for the best baby registry outfits they’ll actually wear.

We do have one caveat to add on the useful baby gifts topic: You may want to register for an outfit they’ll wear for newborn photos or family pictures. In that case, we recommend the adorable Amalia Romper for blue-eyed baby girls and this plaid set for sweet baby boys.

So, take it or leave it: add a photo-ready outfit to the registry.

Top Baby Gifts Worth Their Salt: Feeding

Everyone is different when it comes to feeding, and you won’t really know what your little one prefers until they’re out and about. That said, we absolutely swear by a few baby registry essentials in the feeding arena.

First, you’ll want to use burp cloths that cover a large area.

Murphy’s Law is applicable to spit-up: If it can get on your favorite outfit, it will.

UNLESS you pick burp cloths that cover more area and are soft against baby’s skin.

muslin burp cloth is going to be your best friend for keeping things fresh. We recommend stocking up on burp cloths so that there’s always one in reach, especially because you’ll want to wash them often.

Other useful baby gifts in the feeding department are a breast pump, breast milk storage essentials, and baby bottles. Many insurance providers will cover at least part of the cost of a breast pump, so we suggest starting there when selecting your model.

As for breast milk essentials, we love this all-in-one kit for keeping your milk supply organized and your bras leak-free. And when it comes to breastmilk baby bottles, this Nanobébé US bottle was named the Best Baby Bottle by the BUMP for breastfed babies

We may not have a crystal ball that can predict your baby’s preferred bottle nipple, but we’re confident this is the place to start. Add a single or 3-pack to your registry, but don’t stock up too heavily. You’ll want to test it out with your little one before getting one in every color.

                      For Later:

Around 5 or 6 months, you may find yourself reaching for baby’s first solids. Our 100% BPA and chemical-free silicone feeding supplies by Mushie are the way to go. They’re cool baby gifts with their trendy color options, and they make fun baby gifts from the friend who is looking out for your future.

New Baby Gifts for Sound Sleep

When we were pregnant with our first child, my husband and I were living a life of luxury (read: necessity) in a one-bedroom apartment. To make room for baby girl, we transformed our small dining room into a make-shift bedroom with a pack-and-play that included a napper, changing table, and storage for clothes.

Assuming you aren’t quite as space-limited as we were, you’ll want to pick up a basinet and bedding that you love. This is where you’ll take an abundance of photos and videos, and you’ll never forget those sweet sleepy moments.

It’s also important that your changing area protect what’s underneath while supplying adequate cushion for your child. This diaper changing pad is agile enough for home and travel, or you can set up a stationary changing pad with removable changing pad covers

In reminiscing about our time as a new family of three, my partner reminded me that a blackout curtain, noise machine, and bamboo swaddle were absolutely essential. Additionally, we leaned heavily on a humidifier in the dry mountain air.

Best Baby Registry Gifts for Health & Hygiene

I’m five+ years into motherhood, and baths are the bane of my existence. If I can, I gift this parental privilege to my husband, who is much less bothered by the experience.

However, I do take joy in selecting earth-friendly and human-kind products for my kids. These bath time goodies from Mushie and Gryph & IvyRose fit the bill, as do the adorable flower training toothbrushes for building healthy routines.

Since we’re keeping the baby registry list to must haves only, it’s absolutely okay to skip a baby bath tub and opt for the kitchen sink instead. In terms of what to put on baby registry, we also suggest a baby thermometer, snot sucker, and fingernail clippers.

Best Baby Registry Gifts for Getting Out of the House

Some of the most delightful moments occur when you step out of the house as a mom-and-baby pair. For me, pushing a stroller in the sunshine felt like self-actualization. I loved how it made me feel like a “real mom,” and the walks around the block were beneficial to my mental health.

That said, in the hierarchy of the best baby gifts, I’d place strollers and car seats at the very top. You’ll want a stroller that is appropriate for newborns and up, such as this luxury stroller by Stokke. The infant car seat and carry cot for newborn are available separately, so make sure to add those to your baby registry, as well.

A note on car seat bases: my mother-in-law insisted on gifting us an extra base so we could keep one installed in each car at all times, and that move was brilliant. If you have room on your registry, add a car seat base for each vehicle.

Complete your baby gear essentials with a diaper bag that fits your needs. With my first child, I chose a diaper bag that was fashionable, but it didn’t fit my laptop. As a work-from-coffee-shops mom, it was really important to pivot to a laptop-friendly option for when I was on-the-go with my second child and her big sister.

This vegan leather bag satisfies laptop needs and stores all the bits and bobs in 11 organized pockets. Plus, it’s gorgeous and comes with stroller clips.

                      Baby Registry Must Haves

While this post sticks to just the baby registry essentials, you can certainly add additional items such as developmental toys, natural rubber pacifiersnursery furnituredecorative items, and more. Let your village provide the things you need as your family makes room for another person (or people) to love.

We’re overjoyed that Easter is fast-approaching, but we also know that the busy routines of life can get in the way of preparing for our ideal Easter weekend. The goal is to make it intentional, fun, and festive for the whole family—and for that reason, we’re starting now!

We’re pulling out the Easter baskets to fill with beautiful, sustainable Easter gifts. We’re prepping the mantle for felt garlands, the playroom for a soft flower wall. And we’re picturing how cute our little bunnies will be in fresh, spring pjs and daisy bonnets

We honestly can’t wait for Sunday, April 9, but we’re going to enjoy every second of filling Easter baskets with colorful Easter gifts for kids and getting our family-friendly weekend activities ready for launch.

Speaking of family Easter activities, ours will look a bit different this year: We’re having an eggless Easter. We can think of plenty of reasons to ditch the eggs—a vegan lifestyle, the current egg shortage, that funky smell they leave in the kitchen—so we’re going for it.

We came up with some Easter kids’ activities that aren’t reliant on eggs, and we’d love to share them with you! For starters, though, let’s dig in to 2023’s best Easter gift ideas for kids’ Easter baskets.

Read on for a step-by-step guide to filling your kids’ Easter baskets with sustainable gifts, floral and gingham pjs, party accessories, and so much more.

How to Fill Kids’ Easter Baskets in 2023

                      Easter Baskets

Step 1 // Choose Your Kids’ Easter Baskets

This should come as no surprise—the most important aspect of your kids’ Easter basket is the basket, itself. Easter baskets transform a regular gift bundle into a delightful and sustainable gift experience. Consider which play activity your child enjoys the most: a pretend picnic, a trip to the farmer’s market, a hike through the forest, or a stroll with their baby doll. Our piki baskets  are ideal for a Parisian picnic, while these retro baskets (with matching styles for bohemian mamas) aesthetically house all of their farmer’s market finds. Similarly, the mini chari stays in place while kids traipse through the enchanted forest and the strolley in natural or rose is the dreamiest Easter basket for your mini mama.

Step 1 Choose Your Kids' Easter Baskets

Step 2 // Pick Their Pajamas

Are your kids growing as fast as ours? It’s as if they take a developmental leap around the same time U.S. clocks spring forward. Don’t you wish you could slow down time? Since that’s not an option, we suggest making the most of every moment with Easter themed pjs for babies, toddlers, kids—and yourself. You’ll find adorable bunny options in blue and pink, as well as gingham prints for your dapper fellows and posh little ones—and for the flower-obsessed, this spring floral print is an absolute must. Your kids will love snatching these Easter pajamas from their Easter baskets, and you’ll love seeing them in bedtime threads that actually fit!

                      Step 2: Pick Their Pajamas

Step 3 // Play to Their Creative Side

Engage kids' creativity by continuing to fill your kids’ Easter baskets with craft supplies and pretend play toys. We’re enamored with this DIY wand and flower crown craft kit from Meri Meri, which pairs wonderfully with an Easter activity like bunny embroidery! Watch them become busy bees while decorating with Easter stickers, or let them loose on the back patio with these new handmade sidewalk chalks in bunny, macaron, or alphabet shapes.

Step 3: Engage Their Creative Spirits

Step 4 // Add a Bunny Stuffie or Baby Doll

This might be (read: definitely is) our favorite category of Easter gifts for toddlers and kids: Stuffies and Baby Dolls. We are dying over these new bunnies from Cuddle + Kind, and each purchase provides meals to a North American family in need. This therapist-designed narwhal will help your child with problem-solving skills (in an aesthetically Easter pastel hue), and this cozy dinkum lion pip is perfect for your wild ones. Need a soft and soothing plush for little hands, this new bunny from Maileg will bring a calming presence to your youngest Easter babies.

Step 4: Add Bunny Stuffie or Babydoll

New Bunnies from Cuddle + Kind // Therapist-Designed Narwhal Kin // Cozy Dinkum Lion Pip // New Bunnies from Maileg

Step 4 // Fill in the Nooks & Crannies

Follow your heart for this final step of filling your kids’ Easter baskets. In our opinions, an Easter appropriate pair of bunny ears is essential, and these organic cotton shirts (with matching headbands and dresses for dollies) will keep them neutral and on-trend at their next playdate. Kids are sure to go wild for the surprise carrots (with a fluffy chick, temporary tattoos, and a joke inside), and we imagine they won’t be hopping far without this very chic, plush bunny bag. The options are endless for filling in the gaps in your Easter baskets, and we hope you’ll find everything you desire in our Easter collection for kids, babies, toddlers, and mamas.

Easter Activities That Don’t Require Eggs

As promised, we want to share several egg-less Easter activities for your family in case you’re taking this holiday off-script, too! Here’s a non-exhaustive list, but feel free to get creative on your own and sculpt an Easter extravaganza that fits the unique passions of your kids and babies!

Easter Activities That Don't Require Eggs

                      1. Go on a nature hunt for smooth stones and then decorate them with paint, glitter, or these decorative Easter egg tattoos.

                      2. Plan a trip to the park with friends! If possible, go a bit early to set up these bunnies, creating a maze through the park. The kids will work on their observation skills and have a blast searching for the gingham clues!

                      3. Have a crafting party! Sit down for some sewing with the bunny embroidery kit and then get to work on a DIY flower crown! You can use fresh flowers from your yard or enjoy this flower crown craft kit from our Easter collection.

                      4. Put on a puppet show! Make your own from craft supplies at home or pick up this organic cotton bunny puppet to play out all kinds of silly scenarios.

                      5. Use natural dyes on bandanas—not eggs—to enjoy the transformation to fun colors with sustainable practices! You can find instructions for experimenting with turmeric, black beans, onion skins, and avocado pits from various online crafters.

                      6. Bake a vegan cake together—or use wooden eggs for your pretend cake with this Bunny Hop Mixer Set.

                      7. Go on a family bike ride—with brand new bikes for extra fun!

                      8. Make a fruit plate in the shape of an Easter egg! Encourage kids to get creative with colors and patterns while filling in an oval shape.

                      9. Play some outdoor games! Fun for kids of all ages, croquet, bocce, and corn hole are a few of our faves (They can also be played indoors!).

                      10. Go on an Easter Egg Hunt for treasure eggs! Choose from gold-coated, egg-shaped sidewalk chalk or plush bunnies in sparkly paper eggs.

Ready to try out some of these Easter egg-less activities? We’d love to hear how they go! Tag us on social @shopbohemianmama to share how you and your kids are embracing Easter 2023!

Unique Bridal Shower Gifts for the Bride

For unique bridal shower gifts she’ll love, go with bride-specific self-care. More than likely, your lovely bride has invoked new beauty rituals as she prepares for the big day. Empower her to enjoy the experience by slipping into a beautiful robe and slippers and pulling those holy grail skincare items out of their bridal zip pouch. She’ll feel loved by your thoughtfulness and the stress will start to melt away. Oh, and on the nights she doesn’t want to lather on the beauty products, your bride can toss on her ivory Bride sweatshirt and stream her favorite TV dramedy while staying cozy and indulging in this very special season of being a bride.

Wedding Day Necessities for the Bride

When it comes to the wedding day dos and don’ts, our mantra is this: A bride should feel like her best self. The little things that make you you should show up on your big day. So if you’re a bohemian bride, don that vintage-inspired Lack of Color rancher hat. Show off your city side while staying warm in this vegan cashmere wool coat, or bundle up like a glamorous icon in the ethically-made champagne wrap. You can even acquire an apré ski aesthetic to round out your adventurous lifestyle with a chic and timeless faux fur cape. Whatever you choose will be your wedding day armor against the whims of your mother-in-law, ill-advised weather patterns, or any minor concerns that arise. You are the bride, and you look like your very best self.

The PlanToys Victorian Dollhouse is the ultimate minimalistic dollhouse that allows your imagination to run wild. Hannah Briggs of Thistle Harvest is an interior stylist, DIY extraordinaire and mama of sweet Colette has transformed the house that her husband grew up in into a cozy home for her family. She has now used her magic touch to turn the  PlanToys Victorian Dollhouse into a whimsical cottage for her daughter Colette's Maileg mouse family! Using her decorating ability to add creative touches from playful wallpaper & flooring to a mouse gallery wall! More on Hannah's inspiration below...

                      PlanToys Victorian Dollhouse

                       PlanToys Victorian Dollhouse

I knew that I wanted to gift Colette a really special dollhouse one day and I thought, "Why not for her 4th birthday?!" I was able to partner with oldbazaaristanbul for this gorgeous PlanToys Victorian Dollhouse and I had the idea to DIY the interior by designing and decorating the rooms for the sweetest little mouse family.

I researched, brainstormed, and created mood boards and recently got to work on a super precious project for my favorite girl. I can't believe all the sweet options out there for beautiful dollhouse wallpaper! It was so hard to narrow down which ones I wanted to use for the house but ultimately decided to choose a few from this Etsy shop. They are so incredibly beautiful and I couldn't resist the William Morris lemon printed wallpaper for the kitchen!

                      Maileg & PlanToys Victorian Dollhouse

Big Sister Mouse // Vintage Mouse Bed // Mouse Bed // Mouse Closet // Pyjamas for Dad Mouse

Installing the wallpaper was a little tedious but fairly simple. I just measured with a measuring tape the walls and nooks and crannies that I wanted to add it to. I then cut out my paper and used double sided tape to keep in place. I personally wanted to shy away from glue and by generously applying double sided tape, it worked like a charm!

I found some faux floor tile at Hobby Lobby, along with the cutest little table and chairs, kitchen accessories, tea set, and other tiny goodies. I sourced the rugs from Etsy and oldbazaaristanbul also gifted me some darling Maileg Dollhouse accessories.

                      Maileg & PlanToys Victorian Dollhouse

Dining Table // Chairs // Tea Set // Miniature Toaster

I wanted to add a few very personal and special additions to the house so I browsed online and found a few mouse portraits to print out, cut to fit, and frame in these little miniature mirrors, (also from Hobby Lobby). The result? The most precious gallery wall of the mouse family. I can't handle the cuteness!

                      Maileg & PlanToys Victorian Dollhouse

Fireplace // Mouse Chair // Mouse Bathtub // Sink Dresser

Another personal touch was to add miniature books that I found on Etsy. I thought this classic set would be so charming in the dollhouse's living room. I glued some scalloped plates to the wooden hutch and added the tiny library to it!

Coco absolutely adores her new PlanToys Victorian Dollhouse and it makes my heart so happy to watch her play and enjoy it for years to come!

You might have heard this term thrown around a bit lately and be wondering what it really means. It’s okay I didn’t really know what it was a few years ago either. I thought it was just a term yogis threw around. I was very enlightened when I was trained in Nonlinear Movement by Michaela Boehm the queen of embodiment.

What is embodiment? Embodiment is coming back into your body; it’s the process of becoming alive to the signals of your body. It’s the living in the FULL human experience.

The truth is most of us don’t really LIVE inside our bodies, we live in our minds and our minds tell us all sorts of distorted things like, “I’m not good enough, smart enough, fit enough, healthy enough, young enough, or I am defective in some way. You might not know this but, YOU WEREN'T BORN THIS WAY! Remember being a child and just moving and playing in your body for fun? As children we naturally integrate our mind, body and spirits… it’s much easier to live in your body as a child because you haven’t had much outside influence to tell you that you are anything but PERFECT!

                      one // two // three // four // five

So where were you when the world got a hold of you? When I started doing this work I asked myself this question and I flashed back to a memory of when I was 11 years old. It was a Sunday night and I was headed to AWANAS, a Sunday school type program that was filled with fun and games and lots of Bible memory challenges….the latter was not so fun. I stressed out trying to earn those badges and awards and my 10 year old neurodivergent brain couldn’t keep up with the homeschooled kids at my church.

Okay I’m digressing, the real story is how on this night I was shamed for wearing biker shorts. It was 1993 and biker shorts were all the rage so my mom got me a black pair with a hot pink striped down the sides. I felt so cool. Until this Sunday night when a pastor at our church told me that “I was making men stumble” with my biker shorts since they clung to my legs and buttocks. I was baffled. I didn’t know what “stumble” meant and I sure as heck didn’t know why they would do such a thing for just seeing my body. My body was meant for fun and movement at this time of my life, not for visual pleasure or stimulation. I was educated quickly in modesty and how it was my job and the job of all women to dress in a way that doesn’t make a man objectify them. Side note: this is a form of female objectification.

At 10 years old the world got a hold of me and I became acutely aware of how clothes fit on my body, how I interacted with boys and men and how I presented myself in the world as a female. Looking back on this memory I know now that this is when my body became my enemy and men became dangerous.

I could go on and on about the damages of Purity Culture and how its victims symptoms mirrors the same adverse symptoms as sexual abuse survivors. If you want to hear more about that follow me on insta @chrissyjpowers. ;)

                      Free People Tilda Wrap Dress

But what I want to tell you today is that you can come back to your body. You can reclaim and own your body. I can honestly tell you that at 40 years old I’m living fully in my body for the first time and it’s amazing and so life giving.

How do you come back to your body? First you must accept what is. What do you feel in your body today? How do you relate to your body? What kinds of things do you say to her? If they aren’t words you’d tell your best friend then you shouldn’t be saying them to yourself.

Your body is your best friend and is always working in favor of your healing. I know this because years after my cute biker-short-wearing body was shamed I suppressed my emotions around my sensuality and femininity and my body fought back. I struggled with an eating disorder for much of my 20’s and my body was wrecked with anxiety and panic attacks. I created my own cage to keep me feeling safe and worthy. When I look back on times like this  in my life I get emotional  because my body, the very thing I fought against, was always there for me. If I wanted to run 17 miles and deprive myself food she did her best to accommodate, when I wanted children with my husband she obliged, when I fed 3 babies with milk from my breasts she provided. My body is a divine! My body was never a stumbling block. My body was and is a representation of the DIVINE light in you and me.

                      one // two // three // four // five

When my panic attacks reached their height I looked in the direction of embodiment work. Through moving my body and listening to her I started to see what wasn’t working for me and I started to pull out beliefs that were hurting me. I set aside time to move out trauma and old dogmas that made me feel less than or restricted and I began the process of freeing her.

If you feel locked up in your body today or you’ve created your own cage of false security I promise you there’s hope outside the cage. Your body has an inherent wisdom and knows how to move and release without you telling her what to do. The job of the wounded maiden is to release the wounds that were given to her and to reclaim who she was always meant to be.

I’ve never had more fun discovering who I am! Today I experiment more with what I actually like, I’ve dyed my hair from blonde to brunette because it felt right, I move my hips more and I own my sensuality as a woman. I’m not perfect, I’m still healing, but I’m honored to do this work, to show my daughter a new way to live in her body and to come along side women who also want to reclaim themselves. It’s the most meaningful work I’ve had the privilege of doing as a therapist and embodiment coach.

Start by putting a hand on your heart and a hand on your diaphragm and take a deep breath in through your nose and out through you mouth. Do this 4 times and see how you feel…. Better right? That’s because you were in your body when you did that. So if you don’t know where to start, start here. Then do it again tomorrow, ask for help and prioritize your healing. You will not regret it.

Sending you so much love and support.

It sounds dramatic. “Give a damn.” But isn’t that what we want for our children? Children that go out of their way to help a child that feels left out or different in some way? Children that show empathy and care for another child crying? Children that see the earth not as a garbage can but rather a beautiful masterpiece to take care of with great intention? Children that truly know what it means to accept others and celebrate differences?

But how do we teach this?

The answer is we don’t teach this. We model this. And the way in which we model this deeply affects and sinks into a child’s heart and soul.

What do we care about? How do we answer their questions? How do we show them and guide them towards kindness and compassion? What does it look like to “be” inclusive?

I often think about the things kids say out loud. They often don’t have the reservations or emotional maturity to keep things to themselves at a young age. And so they see what they see and they ask because they simply want to know.

And the way in which we respond says it all.

“Mama, that person is in a funny chair and only has one leg, are they hurting?”

“What a beautiful person, they have a really special chair to help them get around the store more easily, so they are more comfortable in their body.”

“Mommy, that person is wearing a wrap around their head, why?”

“Awe yes isn’t that beautiful? People express their style, ethnicity, and who they are in so many cool ways. That person feels most comfortable wearing a head wrap. Doesn’t it look beautiful on them?”

I think as parents sometimes we aren’t ready for the curve balls our kids throw. But what if we became ready? What if we stopped asking them to look away and be quiet? Instead we answer them. We guide them. We share what’s going on, and we ask them to treat all humans with dignity and respect. It starts with us. With our actions, our honesty, our replies and our own hearts.

Teaching our children the importance of giving a damn helps them notice the beauty all around them. Normalizing the differences we share as human beings is the start. When we connect the earth and humans as one, we understand the power of unity. The power of inclusion. The power of empathy. The power of responsibility. The power of understanding the inherent worth of all things.

Our children can be guided towards believing that every human being on this planet has a right to safely exist within the body they were given. But we have a responsibility as parents to teach our children such truths. So that they too will care for all living beings.

Five things to help your children give a damn:

                      1. Ask them to draw a picture of all the different types of people they see. Have them draw different ways people get around in their body, the ways in which hair is styled or accessorized in unique ways.
                      2. Talk openly about different religions as well as no religion. This helps them understand that people choose religions or none as a way to connect with themselves and the world. None of it = bad.
                      3. Demonstrate what it means to help others by bringing food to a food shelter, giving money to homeless people, and writing letters to the seniors in senior care.
                      4. Volunteer with your children to pick up garbage in your neighborhood or city.
                      5. Guide your kids towards reading material that familiarizes them with what it means to be inclusive of others and to treat every human being with dignity and respect.
                      6. Be mindful of the dolls, books, and playing material that comes into your home. Intentionally represent all types of ethnicities, body types, and ways of showing up in this world.

May we guide our children to be soft, strong, kind, and assertive. May we welcome their tears as an opportunity to let them feel the emotion of sadness and anger instead of stuffing it. May we guide them towards inclusion of all human beings, and the differences that make us truly unique and beautiful individuals. May we teach them to stand up for the hurting and lonely. For these children are the hope and power of the future. A future that welcomes inclusion of all beings. Nourishment to the ground beneath our feet. Empathy and compassion to help and bring hope to every human being. May the love and passion in their eyes lead us into greater love for one another, no matter our differences.

“YOU are worth the quiet moment. YOU are worth the deeper breath. YOU are worth the time it takes to slow down, be still and rest”

Slowing down is a lot easier said than done, we know and feel that to be very true. But as a new season approaches and kids head back to school, we think it’s a perfect time to reflect and put energy into finding new rhythms that serve YOU.

Self-care can look like and be many things. It can be as simple as going for a walk, quiet time to read each day, getting your hair done, drawing a nice warm bath, setting your phone to “do not disturb”, listening to a podcast on your way to work, or rising before the children so you have time to think and be with just YOU before the rush of the day begins. No matter what it is, as long as it’s time to be still with YOU and only YOU to tend to your heart, mind, and soul for just a few minutes a day, that’s self-care loves!

We have created a list of things we’re doing and using this month that support self-care. We hope you will find this both helpful and useful!

Every mama’s nursing mileage will vary and not one journey will be the same. This is why the journey is YOURS and you have endless support out there for wherever your journey takes you!

Breastfeeding has been around as long as there have been babies but over time mothers have gained options for their motherhood routes. With each new time period, breastfeeding experiences different waves of popularity. It’s only been the past century however where our society, as a whole, seems to be embracing the many benefits of breastfeeding to both mother and baby.

And there are many wonderful benefits of breastfeeding:

                      1. Breast milk shares antibodies that protect babies from illness. These antibodies help babies develop a strong immune system. Some consider breast milk “liquid gold” for the value it brings to your baby.
                      2. Skin to skin contact with your baby is a great way to bond, form early attachment, and provide comfort to your baby. The practice of breastfeeding is intimate and can be a wonderful way to grow and become closer together.
                      3. Breastfeeding can reduce the mother’s risk of breast or ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. That’s right. So not only can it be a good thing for the baby’s health, but for the mother’s health as well.
                      4. Breastfeeding can reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Research has shown that breastfeeding cuts the risk of SIDS in half for babies who are breastfed for at least 4-6 months.

The tools and support services women have today to help guide them along their journey of motherhood is both endless and beautiful. We love that women can feel more empowered in today’s world to make the decision that is best for them on how they want to feed their baby. It’s a personal one but not something that any woman has to experience alone. And as an added bonus, there are so many innovative products to help you and your baby along the way in an effort to make things easier and more comfortable.

We gathered a few breastfeeding essentials for you below!

Keep their papers organized with Aykasa foldable and stacking crates. School tends to welcome a lot of extra paper work in the house. Whether it is things that need to be signed and returned to school or it is work that your child has done, it can tend to feel overwhelming. The Aykasa crates are a nice option to keep things organized and in one place! They're super fun to add to an art room or to use for homeschool supplies too.

Lastly, just know that you are not alone! Every parent and caregiver is going through the same thing as you. Feeling crazed? There's another mama feeling the same way. Feeling excited and relieved sending your child back to school? Yep, there's someone else celebrating too!

Feeling sad and lonely? Big hugs! We know the feeling.

Feeling anxious and worried? Goodness we understand that. The past few years has certainly created a lot of space for those feelings to come up.

Know we're here for you and that YOU GOT THIS!

Wishing you all the best as you send your love one off to school!

Bringing your baby to the beach can feel intimidating to some first time parents, but as long as you have a game plan and the right gear, baby beach days can be a breeze. We talked to a handful of mom’s to get their valuable advice — here are their top 5 tips for taking baby to the beach.

                      BYO Shelter

The most important thing for any outing with a baby is safety, and the beach can be a harsh environment for those littles without the proper protection. When it comes to spending time in the sun, you’ll want to make sure you pack your own shade! Don’t count on finding a shaded spot or renting an umbrella — bringing your own umbrella or tent will be crucial to keeping baby cool and out of the sun. Lay down the beautiful Grandé Fleur Nightshade Picnic Blanket by Wandering Folk to keep the sand away and place your umbrella or tent over it for a safe play area for baby. For naps or lounging in the shade, we love Dockatot’s Cabana Kit. It has a retractable UV-protected shade of 50+ SPF, shielding your baby from the sun and other elements to make your time at the beach even more relaxing.

                      BYO Shelter Options

                      Sunscreen & more sunscreen

Of course you’re going to want to bring sunscreen to the beach. But, when you head out into the sun with your baby, bring more sunscreen than you think you need. I like to pack 2 or 3 bottles: just in case I forget one somewhere, lose one at the bottom of my bag, or run out. The last thing you want is to have to bail on your beach day early because there is no more sunscreen to go around. Setting a timer to reapply sunscreen to your baby can also be really helpful in preventing a sunburn. Our go-to sunscreen for babies? Baby Mineral Sunscreen Lotion - SPF 40 by Earth Mama Organics! This cruelty-free Baby Mineral Sunscreen Lotion (Broad Spectrum SPF 40) is formulated for sweet, soft and delicate baby skin with organic shea butter and organic calendula. It also contains non-nano zinc, organic red raspberry seed oil (which has the highest naturally occurring SPF value in the plant world) and organic pomegranate seed oil for a boost in UV protection. It’s not only safe for babies, it’s safe for oceans, reefs and swimming pools, too.

                       Sunscreen Options

                      Keep Em’ Hydrated

Babies overheating on a hot summer day is a valid concern for parents. Having fluids readily available is crucial for preventing dehydration. It is not recommended for infants under 6 months to drink water, so make sure they drink plenty of breast milk or formula. Babies over 6 months who have started solids can be given sips of water on hot days in addition to milk. And, just like the sunscreen tip: pack more than you think you need. You’ll have peace of mind knowing you won’t run out of fluids for your baby. Need to keep water or milk on ice for your babe? Fill up the handy dandy Ziggy Cooler Bag by Wandering Folk! This vegan-friendly cooler bag will keep your drinks and well-chilled with its padded cooling insulation. The clear interior lining is attached with velcro for easy removal and washing.

                       Beach Tote Bag

Leave the Diaper Bag at Home

This tip is less about the baby, and more about the cleanup for the parents. I know that you already have your diaper bag packed with all of your usual essentials — so you may think you could just add a few swim diapers and call it a day. Trust me when I say: you’re going to want to leave the diaper bag at home. Pack a fresh bag with only your beach day essentials that you won’t mind getting sand in. You don’t want to be pulling out sandy pacifiers or diapers weeks after your beach trip. For a designated beach bag, we love the Matisse Sunset Tote. This beautiful woven raffia tote bag features an interior slip, zipper pocket, magnetic closure, and ample space for all your baby’s sunny day essentials.

                      Keep it Brief

For most parent’s the days of spending hours and hours on the beach are on pause when they bring a new baby home. Test the waters by planning your beach trip around nap times and meals — you may be able to keep meltdowns at bay! Plus, a shorter beach trip may help keep your expectations in check. Dip your toe into taking the baby to the beach with shorter trips before you commit to a longer outing.

Most importantly? Try to have fun! Making memories with your new bundle of joy is what it’s all about.

5 Mantras to get you through Summer Break

Summer is upon us and while the kids couldn’t be happier, many parents are likely feeling a little anxious. Don’t get me wrong — the majority of parents are thrilled for the start of summer and whatever adventure awaits — but this is a safe space, and it’s okay to feel stressed out about your kids being home all day. Between vacations, play dates, and heatwaves, structure tends to go out the window which can lead to a bit of chaos depending on the kid. Whatever your plans are for Summer break, we’ve curated a list of 5 mantras to keep in mind when you’re feeling overwhelmed this season.

                      I can do hard things

First things first, take a deep breath. Challenging situations are almost always worse in your head than they are in reality. Yes, you will have hard days, but have confidence in yourself! You gave birth to these kids! If you can do that you can do anything — you’ve got this!

                      They are only young once

I know it can be hard to see it when you’re in it, but all the old sayings are true. The days are long but the years are short and they are making core memories right now! Try to not sweat the small stuff and let the stress go — let them be little!

It’s okay to not have a plan

During the school year, it’s normal for many families to have a schedule from sunup to sundown — but that is easier said than done in the Summer. Embrace the days of having nothing to do and flying by the seat of your pants. Most importantly, cut yourself some slack: structure is important but Summer is the time to be flexible.

                      Tomorrow is a new day

When all else fails and you are just having one of those days, remind yourself that everything is phase. It won’t be Summer forever and you and your family will be in a new phase of life before you know it. There will be tough days, but you can always look to tomorrow for a fresh start.

I am ready for fun – enjoy every moment – embrace your inner child

Parenting always comes first, but you can still have fun while you’re doing it! Embrace your inner child and have some fun with your kids. Reframing an activity from a chore to something fun will do wonders for your mindset. Share activities with your children that you loved as a kid and watch them experience something you love.

No matter how you plan on spending Summer break with your kids, you really only need to remember one thing: enjoy it.

It’s June — which for most of the US means that Summer is *unofficially* here — and it’s the perfect time for you to get outside with your kids. Spending time outdoors with your kids is so beneficial, but sadly, on the decline. Blame it on TV, smart phones, or video games — the average American child spends five to eight hours a day in front of a digital screen. The repercussions of too much screen time, at the expense of unstructured play in nature are detrimental to the well-being of children. So this year, the team at oldbazaaristanbul challenges you to spend 1,000 hours outside.

1,000 hours outside is a movement to encourage children and their families to spend more time outside and less time in front of screens. From their website: “The entire purpose of 1000 Hours Outside is to attempt to match nature time with screen time. If kids can consume media through screens 1200 hours a year on average then the time is there and at least some of it can and should be shifted towards a more productive and healthy outcome!”

Founded by Ginny Yurich, 1,000 aims to encourage families to track how much time they spend outside with nature — essentially gamifying something that is really good for you! The recommending time outdoors per day for children is 4-6 hours. We know, as parents ourselves, this sounds like a lot of time. But, the benefits of unstructured play outdoors has so many benefits for children — it’s certainly a goal worth striving toward.

                      Benefits of play in nature

                      1. Improved cognitive function

                      3. Less sitting, more being active

                      5. Less depression and anxiety
                      6. Increased attention span
                      7. More vitamin D exposure helps reduce the risk of certain health issues
                      8. Improved eyesight
                      9. Exposure to natural light + lots of physical activity = better sleep
                      10. Active kids are more likely to grow into active adults

Motherhood is challenging for many women – especially in those early days when the hours blend together and you can’t remember the last time you took a shower. Whether you have preexisting mental health concerns or it's something that’s never crossed your mind, the pressure and anxiety that come with bringing home a baby can feel extreme and difficult to cope with.

I remember when I just had my first, the chaos and uncertainty of newborn days felt like it would never end. It’s hard to imagine that life is actually moving forward and it’s not going to feel like this forever.

It’s not uncommon for women to experience some type of postpartum depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder — and that can feel really scary! While there is no sure way to eliminate the chance of you experiencing some sort of mental health crisis after birth, there are steps you can take to strengthen your mind and get in a good head space for birth.

                      Get educated

If you have a previous mental health diagnosis or a family history of anxiety or depression, get yourself familiar with the signs and symptoms of postpartum mental health issues. Speak to your doctor about your concerns and come up with a plan of action, just in case you need help. Share the signs and symptoms with your partner or family members, so they can have an idea of what to look out for as well.

Limit your time on social media

Something I didn’t expect to feel during those first few months: loneliness. Motherhood can feel extremely isolating, which can weigh heavily on our mental well-being. And, when you're up at 3AM nursing your baby for the 5th time, scrolling social media is such a simple go-to, but it can actually be super damaging! Being on social media actually isolates us from our real-life networks, and you’ll need your village to get through this big life change.

                      Ditch the unrealistic body goals

Eating healthy and working out is a great way to feel good about yourself after giving birth. However, it’s so, so important to let your body and mind heal without the pressure of “snapping back”. There is a lot of outside noise telling you to race back into your pre-baby jeans — and when that doesn’t happen quickly, you end up feeling bad about yourself. Try to refocus your mindset — you just created something amazing, and your new body is not inferior to your old one!

                      Schedule time to do nothing

This new little love in your life is going to take up a lot of your time. Like all of it. And they should, of course! But you’re not meant to take care of this baby alone — so ask for a break when you have help available. Setting time aside to do things for you (not chores) like taking a relaxing bath, meditating with your favorite essential oil, or snuggling up with a coffee and watching an episode of your favorite show will give you the reset and refresh you need to be the parent you want to be. Mom burnout is real, and you deserve time to yourself that isn’t childcare or housework.

                      Reach out to a professional

Thanks to positive initiatives like National Mental Health Awareness Month (It’s May!), we now know that there is no shame in needing help from a doctor if you are struggling with your mental health after giving birth. The goal is to feel better, for yourself and for your baby — and therapy can help with that. If you already have a therapist, they may recommend an increase in sessions while you adjust to new motherhood — and if needed, they can suggest medication to ease your symptoms. If you don’t have a therapist, you can always reach out to your primary care physician or OBGYN and they should be able to find you the help you need.

The good news is, being a new mom is just a season of your life, and it will constantly be changing. New milestones will bring new challenges and you will get through those too. And, if you’re like many mothers who need help to get by sometimes, ask for help and lean on mental health resources available.
